It should not be surprising that you can infer a great deal about someone by what they are wearing.

Yes, such as whether they're petty enough to let meaningless social rules dictate their life.

If you see me wearing a tshirt and shorts, what does that tell you? It tells you I like wearing tshirts and shorts. Perhaps it also tells you I have an enormous disdain for the absurd neurotypical ideology that society can dictate everything you do regardless of whether it actually matters at all. I'm proud to rise above all the stupidity that NTs inflict on themselves and tell the world that I don't care what it wants me to do.

If there's anything else you'd infer about me from that outfit, I'd love to know, Mr. Holmes.

People will deal (judge) with you , that do not otherwise already know you ....by your appearance . This is a common fact...." The clothes make the man" is a very old saying that still is true .

Maybe a better saying would be "The clothes define what people think of you." But not who you are.

Anyone who's shallow enough to judge me by my clothes isn't someone whose opinion I value.

Based.

But sometimes judgments are hoops one must jump through in order to secure a desirable outcome.

So I agree with you, but sadly society doesn't always agree with us. :(

Yes..all the above is true .......^^^^^^^.
But understanding societal concepts ( judgements). can be important when dealing with strangers .And many Aspies
prefer some degree of isolation .... hence ..many people will / may appear as strangers ....to aspies 8O
So if a Aspie is going to get a "fair shake" from people you may not know. Being aware of the
"""judgement by sppearances concept""" is a real one . That could pay dividends when interacting with unknown persons.
This applies in all situations with strangers ( anyone you do not know personally Well ) . Especially in any type of business stuff/ often personal stuff too. . as my late Husband said
" You never get a second chance at making a first good impression" T.C.

[ In a ideal World everyone should not judge by appearances, but we do not live in a ideal World] :ninja:

I'm thinking that I'll go for the London look. Pearl studded cap and a cheap pea coat. That for the winter and green for the summer.

I signed up for a Kohl's credit card. Every couple months they send me a 30% off coupon that makes their clothes really cheap if you buy it on sale! Up to 70% discount plus another 30% off makes it a better deal than buying clothes at Savers or Goodwill. Even if it looks good sometimes used clothes wears out really quickly.

I think that dressing in a particular way is not just to make an impression on other people but it can be a creative outlet and a way of letting people know something about ourselves, for instance that we are eclectic and enjoy unusual accessories, just as an example. However for me this is only theoretical in that I am unable to dress in a way that is anything other than very plain. I just don't have it in me, I don't like to stand out, and I wouldn't know where to buy clothes that I like.

Agrees with the above ..! ^^^^^

But ,,, for myself , I usually try to dress for the occassion , often by watching the attire of others ,in that situation , that are held to be accountable , to be in the job that they are doing .' Doing business' . Something slightly formal . Not usually going as far as a dress. But a pants that blends well with the colours of my top . And most of all,as comfy on my skin as possible . Then everyday stuff will wear whatever. And usually use more pins or accents to give people an idea of whom I might be ? Unless its physical work.then it can be coveralls to jeans . But if clothing is all a person has to base their first impression with . Will sometimes add flair to my outfit .A special Pin or jewelry piece. Sometimes..
types of clothing . But "conservative dress" has got me the best mileage with other peoples first impressions .
Use to do Outrageous stuff for clubs, but since have grown older ( maybe Wiser).
[ just my own Thought bubble]
As I age , have gotten to care less about others opinions, but dressing for the occassion ,I still consider to be a prsgmatic thing.

If you are careful, you can get some used clothes that are of a very high quality.

I generally wear clothes until they are very worn, but there are plenty of people who wear clothes a few times and then switch to something else.

One of the coolest things I ever saw was walking up to a certain house of some music fame years ago (1970s) and seeing one of the inhabitants wearing clothes that looked like they were from the 1920s or before. They were in perfect shape and not worn at all. I asked him where he got them and he told me that it was at a resale shop in a nearby town.

Since then, I go to resale shops on occasion to look for older clothes. The best that I've found were some 1960's and 1970's shirts that had a much brighter pattern than what you usually see these days. To me, today's dress shirts tend to be very boring, but the western shirts of today are sometimes more interesting, but not nearly as interesting as the shirts (western and normal) that we wore in the 1960s.

I often shop at thrift stores but I haven't found any vintage pieces, just recent clothes. The quality is sometimes okay but you really have to dig to find things that are not worn or that don't have holes or stains.

At the one I sometimes visit when I'm in the city (which isn't very often), most of the clothing is not worth considering. Out of my last ten to fifteen visits, I've only found two items that were worth buying.

There is one down the street from my office. Everything is $1. I went in there when I broke my Santa Fe style ceramic shaving mug a year or so ago. They didn't have any shaving mugs, but I did get a larger than normal coffee cup to use instead. I also got a pretty good winter sweater for $1.
