...plus movies about Japan.

I guess that the Godzilla (and other science-fiction monster movies) are the favorite of many.

I just finished Sakuran,

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0794338

about a young woman in a brothel during the Edo period.

Tampopo is very good.

Lost in Translation is a must see.

Some people like Teahouse of the August Moon (set in Okinawa, and starring Marlon Brando), plus Sayonara, also starring Marlon Brando.

The Barbarian and the Geisha, starring John Wayne.

The Geisha Boy, starring Jerry Lewis, is hilarious.

Any other recommendations?

Seven Samurai -- add this one to your list of "must watch before you die" movies. It is amazing.

I also just watched "Edo Porn" -- not truly a "porn" movie per se, although there is some luscious T&A. Also, men in very skimpy loin cloths, if that is more you style.

I will recommend "Edo Porn" to the struggling writers and artists. It concerns the lives of two friends, one a painter and the other a writer, who are trying to achieve success in their fields during Japan's Edo period.

I keep meaning to watch Dreams by Akira Kurosawa. Tokyo Story (1953) by Yasujirō Ozu is also supposed to be a classic, although it just looks to be a rather slow-moving family drama.

Ghost In The Shell from 1995 is a great piece of Anime. It inspired the Hollywood film of the same name from 2017.
