So when pack rats is born, the white are genetic weakness, black rats are stronger but females most agile, often bigger and climb cage much earlier. In nature most of weak males die off by disease, famine and so in nature it's just survival, not necessary to pine or draw morbid pictures or behave like looney.
It's males want sex, females have more substance to consider. Another observation (this is in rats) is that brown eye and dark hair is dominant gene, meaning offspring will loose snowy appearance. So mostly only few rat babies will be white.
Now white rats have red eyes which form of albeno, but with blue eyes on reindeer it is alteration that allows less/more light in winter, which doesn't have pupil that resembles a cat or reptiles eyes. Living in harsh arrid conditions in snow also pigments hair but doesn't turn blond, and obviously skin gone has less Melanie. But the survival is harsh and causes health problems, so only few white rats survive to appear to be having fun in the snow. There are topical skin diseases and gangrene. Also diet, so Eskimo health is to be considered, not just that art of cooking with zero spice ingredients and flavouring fish with radish....
