Hey.

I've been trying to find a good way to learn German. I've tried Duolingo but I don't like that it doesn't really explain the differences between formal and informal language. It hasn't covered formal plurals as much as I'd like. Plus it keeps going over stuff I already know.

Memrise is better as it goes further in depth with grammar rules. I also like that it features short movie clips and has videos of native speakers. It's useful to hear words in human voices instead of in the cartoonish way that other apps pronounce words.

However, the main downside is that it requires you to speak with chatbots during certain levels. I don’t usually enjoy engaging with AI in general. I typically try to avoid it.

Watching TV shows and playing video games in German does seem to work quite well. I think video games are better since you have to react to the dialogue which is a fun challenge. I've also started listening to German rock and pop music lately.

Perhaps textbooks? I'm not having a great time with these language apps. Although, learning it that way can come across as overly formal. I've been watching German memes lately and stumbling upon German slang has been interesting. Although I'm sure it's already outdated.

Maybe I should start playing video games in German again.

Any recommendations for ways to learn a language?
