It may be that your tone or facial expression is off and they misread it as a joke.
Communication misunderstandings like that are a pretty normal experience for most of us.

I am not sure it is a good idea to tell others about it.

Because they're stupid and firmly believe in the stereotypes of autistic people.

After all, how could others possibly believe I'm on the autism spectrum? I'm a female adult and I can speak verbally, I show facial expressions, I have a sense of humor and I don't walk like a t-rex.

There are different kinds of laughter:
- you are ridiculously wrong laughter
- nervous to hear that laughter
- I'm glad I'm not you laughter
- who cares laughter
- etc.
Responding correctly would require figuring out what flavor the laughter is.

And I agree that not telling other people you are Autistic might not be a good idea...unless you are very secure in your life and might be interested in challenging people's preconceptions.

P.S. I am very secure in my life. I figure I should be open about my Autism.

I also don’t understand it. Maybe it’s lack of awareness. Or maybe also the influence of social media? I frequently hear “what’s wrong with you” “why you are so weird” etc. I know if I get diagnosed, I will probably hear “you don’t look autistic” if I decide to disclose to someone. Or that “we all are a little bit autistic”.
