Trump repeats musings about taking control of Canada and Greenland

Quote:
The president-elect repeated his jibes that Canada should become the "51st state" after Canadian leader Justin Trudeau resigned, marking the end of his nine year tenure in power.
President-elect Donald Trump has repeated his seemingly far-fetched suggestions that the US should take over Greenland and Canada, the latter coming hours after long-standing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.

Trudeau stepped down on Monday, citing internal battles and an unproductive government. "This country deserves a real choice," the now-former leader said, bringing an end to almost a decade in power.

In response, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that if Canada merged with the US: "there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be totally secure from the threat of the Russian and Chinese ships that are constantly surrounding them."

Trump added, "The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned."

It's not the first time Trump has mused about Canada becoming part of the US. In December he claimed that "many" Canadians wanted the nations to merge, however, a recent Leger poll suggests that the number is around 13%.

Trudeau announced he would be stepping down both as prime minister and as leader of his ruling Liberal party, which will hold a fresh leadership contest to replace him.

Critics suggested the timing of his resignation was ill-thought-out, as it comes weeks before Trump is set to be inaugurated as president of the US. Trump has threatened to impose sweeping 25% tariffs on Canadian goods on his first day in power.

"The resignation means there is now very little that Trudeau can do now to stave off Trump's tariff threat," former Canadian ambassador to the US David MacNaughton told CBC News on Monday.

MacNaughton said Trudeau should have made the move months ago so that Canada could prepare for Trump's tariff threats. Economists have warned that if they were imposed, they would significantly hurt the Canadian economy.

'Make Greenland great again'
Trump also repeated his claim that the US would take over Greenland in a post on Monday night.
“I am hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA’. My son, Don Jr, and various representatives, will be traveling there to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights," the president-elect said.

“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our nation,” Trump wrote as his son, Donald Trump Jr, is set to head to Greenland.

Danish broadcaster DR cited the head of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Mininnguaq Kleist, that Trump Jr's visit would be a personal one and there were no inquiries for him to meet with Greenland's government.

The North Atlantic island was a Danish colony until it became a self-governing territory of Denmark in 1979. In January its prime minister, Mute Egede, repeated calls for the island to hold an independence referendum.

Trump Jr heads to Greenland after dad says US should own the territory
Quote:
Danish government has said little about the president-elect's son's visit, pointing out that it was not an official trip.

"We have noted the planned visit of Donald Trump Jr to Greenland. As it is not an official American visit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark has no further comment to the visit," the ministry told BBC News.

However, several opposition politicians have expressed concern.

Conservative MP Rasmus Jarlov posted on social media in English that "this level of disrespect from the coming US president towards very, very loyal allies and friends is record-setting".
President-elect Trump confirmed his son's trip on his Truth Social social media platform on Monday.

He said Don Jr and "various representatives" would travel to Greenland "to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights".

Trump added that Greenland and its people "will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our nation".

"We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside world," he said. "Make Greenland great again!"

Donald Trump Jr, 47, then confirmed his visit on his podcast, Triggered. "No, I am not buying Greenland," he said, explaining he loved Greenland and was flying there on his father's private jet, nicknamed Trump Force One.

The president-elect's post also included a video featuring an unnamed Greenlander- wearing a red Make America Great Again hat - telling Trump to buy Greenland and free it from "being colonised" by Denmark.

The identity of the man in the clip is unclear.

Greenland lies on the shortest route from North America to Europe, making it strategically important for the US. It is also home to a large American space facility.

The president-elect's eldest son played a key role during the 2024 US election campaign, frequently appearing at rallies and in the media.

I have a suggestion for a way for the Canadiens to fight off the United States 248 virus. Sick Dave Schultz on The Donald. Sure “The Hammer” is pretty old these days but so is Trump.

About that Greenland MP talking about disrespect. It is mean asking a person to do something they have no ability to do.

I know the ICC is pretty busy these days but maybe they can find some time to charge Trump with incitement. I have no idea if that gambit will work but they can’t do any worse then the American prosecutors have at holding Trump to account.

Sounds like Trump wants to be a form of Israeli government....will we be colonizing Greenland or Canada ...or is this a international distraction from some other more nefarious dealings? That Trump may have ? not that trying to absorb those countries is not bad enough ....alittle practice of the old saying live and let live? We already have Thule Air Force base up there..? Not enough for Trump .? Very kind of Greenland to allow us to do that . interesting way of repaying that . Lets hope that Greenlanders do not become the New Palestinians of the world. But to be sure our media would put a 24 carat solid gold spin on this possible situation too.Regardless of the facts

Trump suggests he could use military force to acquire Panama Canal and Greenland and 'economic force' to annex Canada

Quote:
President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday suggested he would consider using military force to gain control of the Panama Canal and Greenland, and "economic force" to acquire Canada.

During a free-wheeling news conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump was asked by a reporter if he could assure the public that he would not use military coercion against Panama or Greenland, a goal he has floated in recent weeks. “No, I can’t assure you on either of those two, but I can say this, we need them for economic security,” Trump said. He said later that he would not use military force against Canada, only "economic force."

“That would really be something,” Trump said of the U.S. taking control of Canada.

“You get rid of that artificially drawn line, and you take a look at what that looks like. And it would also be much better for national security,” Trump said. “They’re great, but we’re spending hundreds of billions here to protect it. We’re spending hundreds of billions a year to take care of Canada. We lose in trade deficits.”

He has quipped lately that it should become the 51st state and on Tuesday said that he had joked with the country’s legendary hockey pro Wayne Gretsky about becoming “governor.” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's ten-year term came to an abrupt end on Monday amid party infighting over his handling of Trump and the promise of 25% tariffs that Trump has promised to enact.

“Well we need greater national security purposes, I’ve been told that for a long time, long before I even ran,” Trump told reporters. “You have approximately 45,000 people there. People really don’t even know that Denmark has any legal right to it, but if they do, they should give it up because we need it for national security.” He threatened to levy tariffs on Denmark at "a very high level" if it thwarted efforts by the Arctic island to seek independence or to join the U.S.

In a video posted to social media earlier in the day, Trump called into a lunch event on the island with Trump Jr.

Of Panama, Trump claimed the U.S. is treated unfairly when it is charged higher rates for its ships to sail the Canal than those of other countries, and that Panama is in “violation” of a deal with the U.S. Trump said Panama has requested $3 billion from the U.S. to help repair the canal even as “China is basically taking it over.” He has threatened to try to take it back.

Once again, I say let Canada or Denmark annex New England. Screw the US. Those are both superior countries (even if Canada is getting worse).

Denmark is the happier one, but Sweden is #1 when it comes to equality and social justice.

If American states wish to be annexed by Canada they'd need to arrange to leave the USA first, which isn't likely to happen. They'd also need to both vote to be annexed by Canada as well as to get Canadian citizens to approve it.

Seems about as likely as Canadians voting to be annexed by the Trumpian regime, which is to say it ain't f****n' happening.

That's pretty much the most intelligent thing I've read about Trump and what he's up to. It's all a smokescreen.

Karbonhalo could very well be onto something.

However, we're still talking about the mango moron--and he really has lost his freaking mind. I believe it is just as likely that some of these babblings are just the most recent bouts of verbal diarrhea.

Just a few weeks ago he spent the better part of an hour..."dancing." As if he's drying the back of his fat neck with an invisible towel. That same guy is spouting this crap
now?

Yes, here we are again. Have the grown-ups lock the doors, and scramble the nuclear codes again. Meanwhile, I will slip some extra ambien into his diet Coke and lead him to a private room with his Fisher-Price cell phone.

Plus Panama has a conservative president (Jose Mulino), so it would be strange to annex the canal and draw the ire of a fellow right-winger.

Unfortunately, there is a backup football, plus Vance would have one as well.

Has anyone felt like just crawling into a kind of capsule that puts you into a hibernation so you can sleep blissfully unaware of the nightmare world we live in, only awakening when the universe is reset?
