Why do some people treat life like it's a competition?

Or a race ?

I seem to think that's the thing I struggle to get round in my head. I seem to find myself trying to measure up to those who unlike me, planned 18 to do this by 25 and then do that by 30 and so on. At 18, I had little idea about what to do in the long term although I small part of me wanted to be novelist because I remember being really into the lord of the rings books after watching the films but that came to nothing as I had different ideas as time went but I still wanted to be a writer but not much of a novelist.

There was a book I halfway read once about how when human beings were able to see the stars in greater detail, they developed the ability to conceive of time in greater expanse as well. Seeing far away, seeing larger things, and then seeing microscopic things, gave humans longer senses of time, which in turn gave them better abilities to think in abstractions.

I'm not sure where my point is here with your question.

Maybe you are not seeing a Future You standing far away as an elder in some particular point in life, and so you don't have a need to develop a plan to get there. I think that is the "race" that most people find themselves in.

The joke is that by the time we near where we were going, we find that the scenery has changed and so we have to adjust our plans. So it may not matter anyway.

People are competitive because resources are limited, and we don't survive without them.

People are also cooperative because humans have learned working together benefits each member of the group more than each one acting individually.

It's a balance of the two.

Seems these days , people are getting put in places of serious competition for resources ,rather than when people supported each other as a a group. I do for you, believing in my time of need , perhaps you will do for me...

But this seems to drain away from us as a people. To me it appears as wokism and other methods were intended to create disparity between people not to bring them together . So to get people to avoid relying on each other . Thusly
creating much more reliance on a dysfunctional government . And its seemingly dysfunctional systems .
And the Anxiety mongering our Corporate Industrial Media system . And peoples fear levels are kept on edge.
So the sense of Competition is seeming to become stronger these days perhaps .
