Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, Cyndi Lauper, OutKast and Phish get Rock Hall nominations
Quote:
Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, Cyndi Lauper, OutKast and Phish are some the 2025 nominees for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a list that also includes two sets of musical brothers who have had public feuds and recent reunions — the Black Crowes and Oasis.
The Hall revealed the list of 14 performer nominees Wednesday, including Bad Company, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Maná, Soundgarden and the White Stripes.
Eight of the 14 nominees are on the ballot for the first time: Bad Company, the Black Crowes, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Maná, OutKast and Phish.
Two candidates this year — Carey and Checker — have had powerful impacts on the charts and culture. Carey has 19 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, while Checker’s recording of “The Twist,” and subsequent “Let’s Twist Again” are considered among the most popular songs in the history of rock ‘n’ roll.
Oasis was one of the dominant British acts of the 1990s, producing hits including “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger.” Its sound was fueled by singalong rock choruses and the combustible chemistry between guitarist-songwriter Noel Gallagher and his brother Liam, the band’s singer.
Their American equivalent is the Black Crowes, who mix Southern boogie, stuttering stomp, blues harmonica, glam rock, and ’70s harmonies starting with their debut album “Shake Your Money Maker.” For many years singer Chris Robinson and his brother, guitarist Rich Robinson, did not speak.
Lauper rose to fame in the 1980s with hits such as “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” and went on to winning a Tony Award for “Kinky Boots.” OutKast, made up of André 3000 and Big Boi, have six Grammys and a reputation for pushing the boundaries of hip-hop.

Fan voting
Mana is the first Mexican band to be nominated.
My automatic votes are Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Joy Division/New Order, Phish, and Soundgarden.
Think ‘50s Chubby Checker’s music is one of the first things that comes to mind
Joe Cocker’s Woodstock performance helped define an era. Unique vocals
As for Phish while I am not a Jam fan they are the defining post Greatful Dead act of that genre.
Soundgarden was so effin great.
Joy Division and New Order deserve to go in as separate bands
Don’t know anything about Mana so not fair to comment. If they are that good it is nice that they are getting recognition.
OutKast I just know that one song.
Bad Company to me is generic ‘70s Hard Rock.
Most of the others I think are very good but not great but I can be convinced
That Christmas song will probably get Mariah Carey in.
If I were British I would probably think differently about Oasis because Britpop was such a massive phenomenon there. Here they and Blur had a few good songs on the radio they came, they went.
You could make a case the Black Crowes, they kept alive 70s genres as current not nostalgia.
Billy Idol was charismatic, perfect for when MTV was king. His songs were likable, they rocked, but great, not to me.
The song and video for ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun” was well fun. We all had a chuckle listening to and watching the video for ‘She Bop’. While songs about female masturbation are fairly common these days hers was the first hit about that subject. ‘Time After Time and ‘True Colors’ are beautiful songs. While her heyday is long gone she is not a pure nostalgia act. Before becoming a solo act she was the lead singer for the short live band ‘Blue Angel’ which was great. I think I convinced myself.
