The counselor was expected to do her job using evidence-based practices, and she did. That’s not to say that counselors never make mistakes or are always good at their job, but as was already stated, that says nothing about the DOE or even the school district in most cases.
Agree with this part...
Evidence based practice? 30 year old Aunt commits suicide + grief = Gay? Got it!
I can’t speak specifically about what occurred with your granddaughter because, not having been involved in the counseling sessions to know exactly what was said and what led up to it, I can’t know the entire situation and whether what occurred was appropriate or not. It sounds like she didn’t tell her that she was gay but asked. In order to ask, she likely had specific reasons for doing so beyond apparent grief.
I will mention in passing that when it comes to my own counseling sessions I usually can’t remember exactly how things were phrased or, sometimes, how we got onto a specific tangent.
Making general statements about school counselors or the DOE based off of one experience seems rather hasty and anecdotal, though. I did say that counselors weren’t above making mistakes considering that they’re human, but in college courses and continuing education classes that staff must take, there is an emphasis on evidence-based practices. I have yet to see anything which would lead me to believe that there’s some conspiracy going on.
