I will mention in passing that when it comes to my own counseling sessions I usually can’t remember exactly how things were phrased or, sometimes, how we got onto a specific tangent.
Making general statements about school counselors or the DOE based off of one experience seems rather hasty and anecdotal, though. I did say that counselors weren’t above making mistakes considering that they’re human, but in college courses and continuing education classes that staff must take, there is an emphasis on evidence-based practices. I have yet to see anything which would lead me to believe that there’s some conspiracy going on.

No I agreed with the part that while counselors are expected to do their job (and most do) some make mistakes. Its possible the counselor working with your grand-daughter made a mistake.
Get the Feds out of education, return the schools to the states. And people can move to or away from the things that don't fit. Easy peasy...

Moving away is not an option for a lot of people, so no, it’s not “easy peasy.” Also, kids deserve a quality education no matter where they live. That would be even less likely to happen for many children without federal involvement. Certain states are pushing for religious indoctrination in schools. Anti-intellectualism is pandemic in some areas. Corporal punishment is still legal in 17 states and practiced in 14.

I think states should have less power in the realm of education than they currently do because they’ve demonstrated that they can’t handle it. It’s not fair for our kids, and it’s not good for our nation.

And what exactly are the intended benefits of this approach, besides letting some some states adopt especially low standards?
Easy peasy solutions are usually the result of not understanding the problem adequately. The only phrase that makes that mindset more obvious is 'Why doncha just...'.

An interesting list of recently published books being on a watch list for American schools.

Those sound like great ideals, only that's not what's happening. The grades that underperforming students receive aren't even accurate. They cannot give below a 69, even if the kid earns a 30. Transportation is in shambles, children who live a mile away must walk if their parents cannot transport them. And they cannot keep bus drivers... Are you currently dealing with having children in the public school system?

How exactly does dismantling the DoE address any of those problems?

My 14 year old son was in an underfunded public school until very recently and is currently in a public charter school, not that anecdotal evidence means much here. There’s a lot of variation - too much variation - among states and individual school districts. Resources need to be more evenly distributed. That continues to be a major issue in education, and it warrants more national attention/regulation, not less.

Yes. I was born and raised in one of the bottom tier states for public education, and am now in one of the best (although I'm not in school anymore, obviously lol). It's absurd that any state is allowed to harm public education like what has happened in my home state.
They're more worried about forcing Christianity into schools and other culture wars BS than they are about improving schools. Which I mean is par for the course with right wing governance. They'll drive public schooling into a ditch so they can then turn around and complain about how bad it is so they can attempt to justify funding private indoctrinating schools.
