What does it mean if someone is 'punching' when dating someone?

It means they're punching above their weight

It's derived from an expression that relates to the sport of Boxing. Boxing is separated into different weight classes. Light weight, middle weight, heavy weight, etc. It's so you don't have a 6'5 250 lb guy fight a 5'7 165 lb guy. If they're so good at their class that they can compete in the weight class above them, despite the disadvantage of weight class - such as a lightweight fighter that is competitive against middle weight fighters - they say he's "punching above his weight / class". Meaning he's capable of being more competitive than you'd think he should be.

In the dating world, it's meant to refer to when two people are together, but people assume that one of the people would generally be "out of the league" of the other person.

Ok

It doesn't usually mean anything to the people involved with each other

It's usually what some people might say when they're judging a relationship or sometimes it's just purely banter

I'm think James heard this at a bar

I don't like this expression because it makes me think of domestic violence. People should NEVER punch their dates/partners.

What if that's what they're into?

Isn't that when a man says something silly and his girlfriend punches him in the arm?

I have come across the expression "punching above it's weight" when refered to relatively small countries, like the Scandinavian ones, playing a larger political or diplomatic role internationally than the size of their populations would suggest.

That they are trying, or have managed to date above their league.

Having a normal conversation means punching above my weight...
