Yeah, they don't mention a CoD, but there's only so many likely explanation based on the facts as presented so far.

He was truly a first rate actor - - not movie star, but genuine actor. To see his best work, I'd suggest the movie Mississippi Burning, in which he plays a southern born FBI agent during a real life search for the bodies of three civil rights workers, during which he has to confront his own prejudices.

He played Popeye Doyle in the French Connection. His character is the namesake of Popeye's Chicken.
