I believe that is intentional. The current administration looks for ways of bringing up an emotional response with short videos and social media content.

This thread started out about RFK and what his plans are

However things have moved further still and we are now talking about cutting programs to assist ASD people in the workplace

Trump is stopping all DEI, to create what he thinks will be a meritocracy where the most talented get the job.

This isn't totally bad i wouldn't want to be on a plane with a pilot that wasn't up to the job for example. There is no reason also that a woman or black person cant be the most talented potential CEO for example.

Its rather different for autistic people, autism is at a minimum a social disability meaning we cant compete on meritocracy nearly all the time, (with few exceptions superpowers etc..) as a NT & autistic programmer going for the same job may look on paper equally talented, but they will hire the NT because they think he`ll be more of a team player and social and it wouldn't be worth the hassle taking the risk for no real added benefit.

So the whole concept of Neurodiversity (in the DEI sense, not to be confused with ND movement) outside of the autistic world may be coming to an end.

Quote:
Stassun said he understood the suspension came as a result of the program having “bad DEIA” words such as “neurodiversity,” “inclusion,” “disabilities” and “accessibility.”

I'm not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but a favourite pet conspiracy theory of Donald Trump has been given the green light to be given multiple millions of dollars of funding from the CDC.

March 7 - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is planning a large study into potential connections between vaccines and autism, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, despite extensive scientific research that has disproven or failed to find evidence of such links.

Trump, in an address to Congress this week, cited the rise in autism among children.
"So, we're going to find out what it is, and there’s nobody better than Bobby and all of the people that are working with you,” Trump said, referring to RFK. U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, whose role includes authority over the CDC, has long sowed doubt over the safety of the combined vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). In a cabinet meeting last week, Kennedy initially downplayed news that a school-aged child had died of measles in Texas, the first such death in a decade, calling such outbreaks ordinary and failing to mention the role of vaccination to prevent measles.

I'd welcome funding in to research if it was useful research, but the vaccine theory is like trying to flog a dead horse. I'm not satisfied that there has been a particular increase in children with autism either - I'd guess it is more of an increase in diagnoses.

This was always the danger with Trump/MAGA/Qanon being given permission by 75 million Americans to be given freedom to spend their hard earned money on proving conspiracies.

Its one thing to divert FBI money from actual national security (protecting Americans) to conducting witch-hunts on anyone said anything negative about Trump and diverting education money to burning books and witch hunts for anyone accused of teaching real history. It's quite another to divert money set aside for children's health being diverted to look into debunked conspiracies. I wouldn't be surprised if RFK appoints disgraced doctor Andrew Wakefield to head the new research.

Don't give him any ideas.

CDC will research widely debunked link between vaccines and autism

Quote:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is initiating expanded research into understanding autism and potential links between vaccines and autism, a source familiar with the CDC’s planning said.

The CDC is one of the agencies that operates under the umbrella of the Department of Health and Human Services, the federal agency that President Donald Trump picked Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead. The Senate confirmed him to the post in a 52-48 vote last month.

The possibility of a link between vaccines and autism has been repeatedly debunked by hundreds of scientific studies. But Kennedy made a profile for himself as an anti-vaccine crusader, criticizing the Covid-19 vaccine and claiming childhood immunizations are linked to autism. He also founded Children’s Health Defense, an anti-vaccine group.

Andrew Nixon, a spokesperson for HHS, said in a statement that the CDC is “delivering” on the “high quality research and transparency” Americans expect.

The CDC's research plans were first reported by Reuters.

Studies can often take several years, at least. It is unclear what the methodology for such research would be, how it would be funded or when results could be released or published.

Roughly $419 million is spent on autism research in the U.S. each year.

“As President Trump said in his joint address to Congress, the rate of autism in American children has skyrocketed. CDC will leave no stone unturned in its mission to figure out what exactly is happening,” Nixon said.

Speaking to Congress Tuesday, Trump said: “As an example, not long ago, and you can’t even believe these numbers, 1 in 10,000 children had autism. One in 10,000, and now it’s 1 in 36. There’s something wrong. One in 36, think of that, so we’re going to find out what it is,” adding that there is “nobody better” than Kennedy to “figure out what’s going on.”

Incoming CDC director Dave Weldon and Kennedy go back at least two decades in their joint scrutiny of vaccines as a cause of autism.

In a since-retracted 2005 Rolling Stone piece falsely linking vaccines to neurological disorders, Kennedy cited Weldon, a then-congressman, writing: “CDC officials are not interested in an honest search for the truth, Weldon told me, because ‘an association between vaccines and autism would force them to admit that their policies irreparably damaged thousands of children. Who would want to make that conclusion about themselves?’”

There are always exceptions to "We hate government waste and redundancy".

The increase in autism rates has more to do with improved diagnostics over the years.

Irreparably damaged children? My God. This political party is more irreparably damaged than I could ever be.
