I've been struggling with depression and I am embarrassed to admit I have been doing a poor job of taking care of my hair. Now a rat nest has formed and I am afraid it will be hard to detangle.

I might have to go to the salon to have a professional cut it out. What is hindering me from visiting is I fear they will judge me for not doing a simple task. Also I have very bad social anxiety and I don't want to do small talk with the barbar. Has anyone ever struggled with this before?

Note I am a female with long straight hair.

I've been through this many a time.

I usually detangle with a fine toothed comb (with metal teeth, it's actually sold for pets, not people).

If it's real bad I'll partially detangle it, then chop the worst sections out.

Worse comes to worse you can just buzz it off and let it regrow. The YouTuber onmushrooms did that, if she can pull it off so can you.

Perhaps you could brush/comb it out easier right after a shower while it's still very wet. Start with wider spaced bristles for a bit & then brush with closer spaced ones after brushing feels a bit easier. That works better for my hair when it's longer but I'm a guy & never had extremely long hair so take my advice with a grain of salt but it might be easy to try. I majorly hated getting my hair cut as a kid due to sensory issues, being in a strange environment, & a stranger touching me,

I am probably necroposting but whatever I haven't been on here as often. Anyways, thank you guys for the suggestions! I had no luck detangling so I might have to go to the salon to get the bad part cut out. At least my dad can be by me that way I have company.

Dude just go, they will help if you have a problem like that. A while back I got dreads, but well I am prone to dandruff and dandruff and dreads aren't really a good combination so I had to get the dreads out, brushing them out sounded like a bad time so I just had them cut them off and basically shave my head I had a little mohawk tuft left for a little bit till I grew my hair back out. so idk if its juust a rats nest they can probably salvage a lot of your hair...and idk if you do struggle with motivation and all that you could ask them to give you a more easily manageable hairstyle. Idk I always feel better when I get my hair sorted out when I don't like how its looking. And if you don't want to do small talk, just don't...like if you give minimal answers and are more quiet, they usually get the hint that you'd rather not talk so much.

I can't even look like a Beatle anymore because my hair has changed over the past 12 years. It's not as healthy as it used to be.
