in my decades on this thumpin' bumpin' world, there were occasions when I read others' minds and other folks read my mind, too many to count. it has something to do with frequency or vibrational level. I don't have control over this, when it comes to me it comes to me, not as often as I'd like, of course. my grandmother and late sister really had the psychic gift, I have what is left-over from them.

I've had occasions where I seem to be able to tune into the universe and precognition of something that happens/appears. Could never prove it in front of a court of law but I know it happens. Problem is its random.

I'm afraid she would be a little embarrassed if she read my mind

^ She'd have to find mine first... Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most.

It occurs that, if genuine actual mindreading was involved - why faff about with all the theatrics?
What would be more astonishing than simply saying "Think of a number" followed immediately by "You're thinking of (X)" and repeated as quickly with names, places, pets etc.
But of course, that won't happen.

When encountering those sorts of acts my inner contrarian always thinks of anything but what was requested.

If they could read minds they should be able to call me out as someone who's there to take the piss out of their act.

There is of course the idea that mind reading (and pre-cognition) did exist in some form and was accepted (one could think of the ancient Greek Oracle of Delphi or village shamans).

But that people with this ability were burned at the stake during the medieval period as witches and warlocks. So if one wanted to profit of their innate abilities they could become wandering magicians, fortune tellers or tarot card readers travelling from town to town. And they advertise their powers as "tricks and "hocus pocus" so nobody takes them that seriously. they make their money and get out of town before they attract attention.

today these people might use their talents gambling in casinos. It would be easy for a magician or mind reader to come across as a trickster so people watching might be amazed and entertained but deep down don't suspect anything assuming its just an elaborate trick. As Arthur C Clarke once said, truth is far stranger than fiction.

And yet they don't seem to. Funny that. :chin:

But they're not relying on magic. Card counting is a skill that can be learned.

TBH, standard card counting isn't really that hard, the main difficulty is in avoiding being caught doing it. There are some harder methods like the one that I used back when I was messing around with it, but even that took me like 8 hours to learn from scratch.

As far as slot machines, that's usually video poker and the machines they use are normally towards the front of the casino and they find the machines based on the payout schedule. Some of them will pay out more than 100% with perfect play. Neither of these things are magic, but in all honesty, they're not really skills that are particularly worth having as the casinos do a lot to try and discourage it. Certainly by the time you start making considerable amounts of money they'll catch on.
