My laptop was made for office work and gaming. I’ve only used it for office work. In the past, I played video games in my free time via console. Both PlayStation and Xbox. Now I’m considering playing pc games.

What is the best way to protect myself these days against malware? I followed antivirus software trends in the past but I don’t know the best version at the moment.

Also, is it better to game via Steam or via subscription like Xbox?

I may even be able to find a tabletop D&D group this way.

(And please don’t pigeonhole me into that “you’re too old for gaming” mindset. People my age and women play all of the time.)

Best way to protect yourself is not to click shady links/ads on websites or in emails.
AFAIK gaming in general is not going to attract attacks.

Every anti-virus I've tried in the past would slow Windows performance too much, so I either disabled it or stuck with Defender (which these days is built in and difficult, if not impossible, to disable).

Someone else would have to chime in on the current good ones, I know Defender isn't quite as good as it used to be.

Okay, thanks. I have Defender already. I also know that some antivirus software can bog down the processor, which would be bad for gaming. I don’t need extra lag in my life. :)

That's hilarious.
I was a professional computer game player for 11 years.
What age group do you think invented them?

Exactly. Still you wouldn’t believe the harassment I’ve encountered while trying to play solo in a multiplayer game. The more I tried to play quietly on my own the more attention I received from others there. I can’t even post some of the comments made from them in open-world chat.

There is a single player game that I have been waiting a long time to play.
