been looking up former coworkers, classmates, and et cetera on facebook and linked in.

some of them look so happy and successful.

i need to stop looking them up.

i'm alone in my house with nothing to do, but i have to do something besides looking up former acquaintenances.

Yeah, stop that immediately.

None of those sites show the reality of a person's life, just the bits they want other people to see.

Yeah, as DHB implies - you are likely seeing a very curated version of a persons life, however successful (or not) a person is on such a social media website.
