Bloody awful they were

but do people still go home for their dinner from school or is that a thing of the past these days

I think these days it's all outsourced, privatised junk food. Probably tastes better but kills you faster.

I used to sneak off and spend my dinner money on chip butties and pinball at the local cafe.

I used to go home for dinner when I was working as well. Usually lived near the workplace so I could do that and save travelling time. They tried to stop me going home for dinner so they could make me work through my dinner hour when there was a lot of work to do, but I ignored them.

Over here your school day was over before dinner was a consideration.

I think she means dinner in the working class British sense of the word. It's called lunch everywhere else but Mum called it dinner and I'm set in my ways. Unless you mean that your school day was over by mid-day. That would be cushy.

Apart from mums cooking, the only time I consistently ate better than at boarding school was at the Institute of Sport. (I really should have stopped going back for the third slice of school cheesecake though)
