Like, I Mean, I LOVE 80's And 90's Music, But I DESPISE Stuff Like Chappel Roan And Melanie Martinez. Even When It Comes To K-Pop, I Heavily Prefer Earlier Gen 1 Stuff Such As Baby V.O.X And S.E.S Over Trash Like Newjeans. And When My Younger Sister Asks Me About If I Know A New Song That's Trending And I Reply With "No", She Says I'm "Living Under A Rock." Is This Normal With Us Autistics? 8O

Yea I like older music as well, I listen to stuff all the way back to the 1930s sometimes! 1930s because my special interest  .. but I grew up with older parents so I grew up with 80s music probably developed my music taste.

I like alternative s**t too

The bulk of pop (as in non-classical) music I listen to is from the 1960s and 70s. I like some music from when I was a teen (early to mid 2000s) and I like some modern music, but it's typically retro (the only kind of modern music I listen to much that isn't retro is Punk/Ska Punk) but yeah, I can relate. My parents grew up in the 60s and 70s and listened to that music a lot when I was growing up, so no doubt that had an impact, but I feel like my interest in that music has taken a life of its own.

When we speak of classical and early music, well I like music going all of the way back to Ancient Greece (but the bulk of what I listen to is western Europe from the 1300s-1700s CE), so even in classical music, I trend much earlier than most people who like classical music. Where I moved from, we had no early music scene whatsoever. Most of what was performed was romanticism (19th century).

That's only because you have taste. The music from even the '90s could largely stand on its own, it didn't need to be tied into positive events in your life to be appreciated. The last 10-15 years in particular have been awash of music that just all sounds the same. There is probably still good music out there, it's just that it's buried under all the Max Martin and Dr. Luke crap.

I don't agree with people that the current music is terrible so much as it's lacking in soul and most of it sounds pretty bland and inoffensive.

I love 80s and 90s music too, but the stuff that’s trending now just doesn’t hit the same. A lot of today’s pop feels too formulaic and lacks the energy or soul that older music had. I think it's normal to feel disconnected, especially if you vibe with older sounds. Music should be something that moves you, not just background noise.

I don't listen to a lot of newer music, although I don't think older music is inherently better. There was a lot of terrible older music too, it's just easier to forget about and it's more likely to be rehabilitated through the lens of nostalgia.

Most pop music in particular is disposable garbage and always has been, so I dismiss the notion that somehow current pop music is inherently worse than older pop music. It's all equally terrible.

There certainly was a lot of garbage in the past, but you don't have people who lived through those periods that flat out can't remember what they were listening to the way that people living through the '10s.

I'm not sure that's true, there was plenty of forgettable soundalike slop on the radio back in the day as well. The fact that you no longer remember it at all is a good indicator of just how forgettable it was.

Yes, but there was a lot of stuff that was memorable. The idea of needing your playlists to know what you were listening to just was not a thing in the past. You might forget a few songs, but you'd probably have a decent list you can remember. That's most certainly not the case now. Musical complexity and variety is far less common than it was even 20 years ago.
