Who is that lady? She looks as if she should be a Tory government minister of the Penny Mordaunt type!

A Ford Orion from an April 1991 episode of Coronation Street. This car is owned by the awful Des Barnes, a bookmaker, and his equally dreadful wife Steph.

An Austin Metro police car from another 1988 episode of The Bill. More commonly known by the British public as the 'Mini Metro', this was one of the models which were supposedly going to revive the struggling fortunes of the British Leyland Motor Company when it was introduced in 1980. It did no such thing however, as it wasn't anything like as good as the competition (eg the Ford Fiesta) and BL continued to lose market share throughout the decade.

I'm mostly used to this version of the Metro:

An Austin Montego estate car ('station wagon') owned by grocer Alf Roberts, from a May 1991 episode of Coronation Street. This was a mid-1980s design from Austin Rover Group (formerly British Leyland), which typically was of very indifferent quality and was no match for the competition, such as the Ford Sierra and the Vauxhall Cavalier.

An Aston Martin DBS, driven by Joe Lampton, the lead character in the early 1970s series Man At The Top. These were manufactured 1967-72, and had a 4 litre straight-six engine. Looks quite similar to the Jensen Interceptor, which was around in the same period.

Hmm, I slipped up there. That's actually a Ford Escort Mk 3, not an Orion (the latter looked very similar to the Escort from the front, but was a saloon car with a proper boot at the rear end).

A Mercedes SL grand touring sports car (popularly known as the 'pagoda top' or 'dish top' model) from the 1965 film 'Life at the Top'. Awesome looking cars, wish I could have owned one, or at least driven one....

A Triumph Stag from Series 2, Episode 3 of Man At The Top from 1972, manufactured by British Leyland from 1970 to 1977. A fascinating car in many respects, but ruined by quality and reliability issues. The 3 litre V8 engines frequently failed, due to overheating problems caused by defective water pumps and corroded aluminium cylinder heads, and also because of premature wear in timing chains and crankshafts. Many desperate owners resorted to fitting the 2.5 litre straight six engine from the Triumph 2500, or the Rover 3.5 litre V8. Only 7000 of these cars were made during the lifetime of the model, a sad tale of what might have been.

Here's a better quality picture of a Triumph Stag:

A Vauxhall Viva from an episode of 'Man At The Top' (1972). A low budget car that looked very similar to the Morris Marina from the front, though it was no doubt better built and more reliable than the latter.

Interesting, in the North American market we also got an Escort-sedan, called the Tempo (and Topaz). Afaik there's very little shared between the Orion and Tempo though despite the US Escort being heavily derived from the Escort Mk. 3.
