Oppish!! !!

Me and my friends used that before.

Wop-e u-sop-e-dop top-o sop-pop-e-a-kop oppish alot.

We would crack up when we figured out words like "popular"

(pop-o-pop-u-lop-a-rop) And people would just look at us like we were from another universe.

The frustrating thing about Quenya is that it isn't complete, and not all of Tolkien's writings about it have been made available. Probably why I lost patience with it; let there be a complete grammar first! It's still worth the effort to study some of the poetry, though; it's a great way to get inside the language. Ardalambion has analyses of Namarie and other texts. And a course... :P

Here's a translation (metrical and rhyming!) of Sam's "In Western Lands". Don't know how precise it is. Especially if you know Donald Swann's music to this, it's awesome to memorize...

Oh yeah, it's too late to warn you now, but this is an old preoccupation of mine :P

echospectra, thanks for that... But it started to confuse me... I really don't understand it. can't you just create a language, using fake/ english letters, and just think up words for english words?

About the difference between codes and languages, you mean? Codes are based on "encrypting" existing words, by putting letters in between, or writing them backwards, or using a different writing system, or sending them in Morse, or whatever... When you make a code, you're not making up new words, you're transmitting existing ones in a different way. Making a language would mean making up new words and a grammar.

I am in awe... 8O Having majored in English Language and Literature, linguistics fascinates me. Maybe I will try to teach Quenya to my son... or to myself...
