yeh, cheers minus, I always leave stuff out....

btw, another decent free chat program for Windows is trillian. There is no spyware, and it supports AIM, YIM, MSNM and ICQ as well as IRC.

Thank you all for the help, but I'm afraid I still have some questions.

I found out why it wasn't connecting before, I asked my friend about it, and he said that our school has blocked port 6667, so he said to use 6666 instead. I tried to do that on x-chat and it tells me it doesn't exist. On Trillian, it tells me I am "partially connected" but I don't see any chat window. How do I get a chat window to open in Trillian?

hi civet
you need to click the IRC button on the right of the contacts window, and select 'show status window'. This will open a window for irc.freenode.net.
type in the text entry field

/join #wrongplanet

this opens a window for the channel. type /nick civet if you haven't already set your nick up, and you're off.
