omg, yes. This has happened to me way too many times. I've even had people looking to me for assistance when I was wearing SWEATS, for god's sake. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one...

This happens to me all the time. My most common stores are Home Depot, Bass pro shop and Tractor supply. When people ask me where to find things there, I actually answer them. It's easier then explaining I don't work there, plus I have the stores memorized more then most the employees anyways.

You don't have to wear clothes similar to the uniform of the shop employees, it's enough to wear something that might be resemblant to shop uniforms in general or something like an "orange lanyard for my keys" that AdamDZ has. I have an orange stripe watch. :P

This seems like a bizarre question. But I actually work at a store and I sometimes get, "do you work here?" and Im in uniform with a name tag and all. So its the opposite with me.

I have been hollered at in stores (Target & Meijer) for wearing a red shirt while shopping, because only employees wear red shirts. Apparently the lack of a name tag & the big logo across the front (of not the store) mean nothing. I was misleading people, confusing them. Hell, the first time it happened I was using a handheld to register for my wedding. (In the early 00s that was still a new thing to allow a customer to use.) It hasn't happened in the last few years tho.

Only if I wear a similar clothing -- or if employees are not wearing any particular uniform expect casuals WHILE unintentionally passing as 'NT Enough'.

Yeah, me looking NT enough will warrant people to think I'm an employee than full on not passing.

If I don't pass as NT enough and wear similar clothing -- they won't mistaken me for an employee.
They'll mistaken me for a kid snooping around who happened to wear something similar.
In which I do not mind... People bother me less this way.

It was a long time ago but it has happened. I think it was because I wasn't carrying a purse so I looked like an employee.

This happens to me occasionally at our local food co-op. I will be shopping and someone will start asking very specific questions about the items or where to find something, then, I guess when they realize I’m looking too nervous or clueless, they ask if I work there! They are always apologetic when they find out that I don’t!
