If you know a bit of Romanian, perhaps you might appreciate some of their music as well - this is from my favourite Romanian singer which is based on a poem by Adrian Păunescu, their national poet:

I have read your linked article from Finland. That was interesting. Especially that thing about morphology/derivation with the word for book and all its derivations. That was quite shocking to see that there could be so many derivations. I'm used to that phenomana from turkish and arabic, but this finnish example with the word, book was extreme.
I now it is a hard language to learn but if it finnish is your AS special interest then its no problem I think.

I could be good for your baby if it could get to learn both croatian, finnish and swedish?

The romanian song is ok, I see it as a good supplement to learn the language. I learned a lot of Hvratskobosanskomontenegrinskosrpski by listening to all kind of Ex-Jugo music

I have not been studying romanian for a long time now beacuse I use all the time on farsi, pashto, mandarin bulgarian and urdu

Here you have my favorite song by the great Toma Z :D
How much wouldn't I give to be at that restaurant at Skardalija in 87. Imagine sitting there and listening to that fantastic charismatic singer. Joj! And imagine sitting there with plenty of vranac pro corde, cevapa and shopska salata, and maybe a bottle of the good old sljivo. I would give my left kidney if I could travel back in time and sit there with the others.

Not indeed - except that I need to focus more on my Latin&Romanian studies...the day just isn't long enough. But the language is awesome - very consistent and regular - it has 1,5 irregular verbs! Unlike most of indoeuropean languages. If you tried to learn Romanian I guess you know what I am talking about. :) It feels as if every verb has its own paradigm.

They have the richest archives of folk art in the world and learning their language is like entering one mysterious world. Even Tolkien made his stories and especially LOTR based on Finnish epic song Kalevala. Also many of the languages he invented (dwarfish and elvish) were very much influenced by Finnish.

This is one Finnish punk-folk band who bases its text mostly on Finnish folk tradition:

I could die for that :) And for Finland as well.

Well indeed - the more the merrier! It would be best to migrate as soon as possible since she will be exposed equally to both languages. I read in multiple studies that bilingual children are more apt at many cognitive tasks. It would be good for her.

LOL yes that is a good description of the language that is mostly separated only by political boundaries :)

Wow - romanian, farsi, pashto, mandarin, bulgarian and urdu, not to mention serbocroatian and you also mention turkish and arabic?? How do you manage all that?

I have an issue of starting to learn too many of them and never quite finishing in the end. I guess it takes a lot of perseverance.

But there is a buddy of mine who is fluent in English, Latin, Ancient Greek, Old Norse, French, Gothic, knows even Sanskrit and Tolkien's Quenya. He is a Finn :) perhaps it has something to do with it.

I guess you have been here then? :) Tried ćevape, šljivovica and burek? I think they still make such parties in Bosnia especially.

Romanian and urdu is the languages I know the least, I'm not even on A1. But I could be in 1 month if I took the time. :)

I'm only fluent in english and danish
But I am on a functionel A2-B1½ level in these languages: German, farsi, bulgarian, arabic, turkish, russian, serbocroatian and polish
Then I am on a low beginner level A1 on these: Pashto and mandarin

I have been to lazy in my earlier life, thats why I'm not on a higher level in my languages. :(

I like that you support the fact that serbian and croatian only are different in a political context, and not in a lingvistic one.

I know crvena Jabuka. But I dont like them! One time here in my hometown "Vejle" there was a concert with them. But it was a double concert where Halid Muslimovic played first, and he was the main attraction for me. I listened to crvena jabuka but their music just irritated me.

I think I have been on all the famous restaurants in Skadarlija. That place is really heaven for me :P And yes I have tried all the food more or less.

I like the "gypsyband" who plays in the resturants and I like that you can order songs from them. One time my professor ordered "march na drinu" That was really a good choice. But I dont think the "gypsy band" felt comfortly while playing it.

I listened to your finnish song and while doing that I instantly thought that it must be something for my friend Anna in Odense. She likes Tolkien, rolegames, Lordi and all such things, so she is bound to like that finnish song of yours.

If you need some good tips on selfstudium then I would recommend the 10.000 sentences method. There is a guy out there called Mike Campbell who is a master in selfstudying, here is a link:

I guess you have no issues with learning different alphabets then? :) I used to be obsessed with Japan and their art but learning their writing system is beyond my capacities to force myself to be diligent.

By the way on which criteria you choose the language to study? I think it would be interesting to study some tribal languages as well - for instance there are certain Amazon tribes that "suffer" from complete mathematic illiteracy - that is they can't count higher than the number 3 :) Again due to linguistic relativity

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/scien ... 77061.html
Quote:
Because of their culture's ingrained emphasis on referring only to immediate, personal experiences, the tribesmen do not have words for any abstract concept, from colour to memory and even to numbers. There is no past tense, he says, because everything exists for them in the present. When it can no longer be perceived, it ceases, to all intents, to exist.

They live in the world without numbers, past tense and even colours :) Amazingly though - due to the nature of their language they can't even conceive numbers.

Well it was serbocroatian for more than 50 years, but in the last 20 years it has apparently evolved into 5 of them. Some speedy evolution I would say :)

But try to tell that to someone here - they would be extremely offended. I am not sure whether and how much are things different in Serbia though. It is a sad story of very similar and related people fighting over difference in religion, mainly.

LOL it seems I just can't guess your musical tastes then :) They are form Bosnia so I thought since you like so much the other Bosnian singers you might like them as well.

I don't actually get how some Danish person gets interested in our music :) I thought it was more locally popular.

Haha well I am glad you like it so much :) I personally have never been anywhere apart from Slovenia - which I liked very much. As far as March na Drinu is concerned I am fine with that but not with some songs that can still be heard here by some of the right wing singers - like Marko Perković Thompson (Bojna Čavoglave). I mean I think it is time to bury the war hatch for good.

Well I am glad if she would like it! :) I started playing role-games as well lately - but on the computer mainly. It would be fun to learn Tolkien's languages as well - if I only had the time for it.

Buna ziva doamna, che mai facet?

Very interesting article about the piraha tribe. Very interesting language indeed. Thanks for that :)

I can say that learning the cyrilic alfabet is a cakewalk compared to the arabic alfabet, that was very hard to learn boga me 8O But it's a great thing to know it. You then have acces to farsi, pashto and urdu

I admit that I have a strange taste regarding ex-Jugo music. The few other danish people I know who like ex-Jugo music like: Crvena jabuka, zabranjeno pusenje and bijelo dugme.
But not me!

How I choose a language? Several ways I think. One of the ways is like the android David from prometheus. Other ways can be when I get in contact with people speaking a particulary language, and then I just wanna learn it. Mandarin is an exception, I learn that beacuse its the worlds biggest language, I am therefore "forced" to learn it. :o Serbocroatian was something I choose beacuse I was a soldier in Bosnia in 99. I became interested in the language beacuse I had so many AS problems with all the other NT soldiers. The language "saved me" (duga veoma tuzna prica ) But not unique in terms of the problems a typical aspie face in his or hers life.

Farsi and pashto are my favorite languages with them, its a love matter :) . I really think I have a good chemistry with them! Yes I know it sounds wierd. But it has something to do with the oxytocin and dopamin levels.

I know your infamous singer "Thompson" I was to a concert with him in Dubrovnik in 2002 or so.. It was a nightmare and the nationalism was everpresent. But anyway I hate concerts beacuse of all the people and the loud music. You may also have the same problem? hence being an aspie yourself

here is one of your cultures finest song:

I would like to study Native American's language as well one day. Then languages of the indigenous people's of Africa and Australia...it feels like exploring whole new worlds :)

Whoah, and I am lazy to learn even Greek alphabet fluently! :) But will have to do it since it is the part of the curriculum. Since I am the generation before ex Yugoslavia collapsed we had to learn Cyrillic as well, but I don't think I could write in it any more - just perhaps read to some extant.

Heh they are not my first choices either :) Well perhaps some songs of Crvena Jabuka, maybe.

This is the type of Croatian music I like:

I never heard of it until now - and after a quick Google search it seems it is Ridley Scott's film "Prometheus"?

Wow an Aspie soldier in war in Bosnia! That must have been very hard. But if you managed to adapt after all it means a victory over an Aspie brain wiring :)

heh indeed :) Finnish has the same effect on me. Also English - I reckon it is my favourite language apart from Finnish. I love even its older forms - like Shakespearean English. Spanish too - but Italian not so much for some reason. Perhaps it has something to do with the mentality of the people that speak it.

Indeed - I never go to concerts. Too many people for my taste and too many decibels indeed. But yes Thompson is unfortunately very popular here - and nationalism is a big problem here. Sure - some Serbs did some nasty things here and in Bosnia, but so did the Croats as well. Especially in the WWII. That is one of the many reasons we will try to migrate from here - political climate is a bit too hot.

Ok Thx for the music videos, its always nice to get ones horizon expanded. I must admit though, having listened to them, that they wasn't quite my choice of taste.
No... Give some of Miso Kovac dalmatinske pisme, that works much better for me.

Regarding the thing about David from the movie Prometheus. well its a bit hard to explain why I feel like him when you haven't seen the movie. But anyway I really identified a lot with him, I think its only aspies that could ever relate more to an android than to a (NT)human :)

I can tell you that if I had known that I had AS in 98 I wouldn't have joined the mechanized infantry! It was totally a ruzan san for me Boli me .....!
I all the time tried so hard to function like all the other soldiers but I just couldn't. Actually there was one from my outfit who were more autistic than me, he also had a hard time. I think I was allowed to become a SFOR soldier in Bosnia, only beacuse they needed soldiers. Its not like now where young men dont have so much unskilled work to choose from and therefore are more than ready to make money by participating in missons to Afghanistan. (I dont think there a anymore danish soldiers left in BIH.

The nationalism in Croatia is something I have been interested in for quite some time. I really understand that you want to migrate.

When I study all my many languages I sometimes make exciting discoveries :o . e.g. this one: Did you know that the word for the muslim outfit for women, the "chador", actually means "tent" on farsi!
I mean its quite logical beacuse it looks like a black tent. Nationalistic people here in Denmark also use the danish word for "tent" when they talk derogatory about the muslims here in DK.

Si eu sunt obosit acum... Voi dormi ca un copil. :tired:

Well I loved Ridley Scott's Blade Runner - so I might just see that one as well :)

As far as identifying with an android that is very much familiar. I always identified with Mr Spock or Capt Data for that matter.

Well that must have been hard indeed - I am sorry you had to go through that. Even a military training must be hard for an Aspie not to mention participating in a war.

Well i am glad you also realise that it is a big issue here. Whenever I try to talk about it with foreigners they usually blame the Serbs. But little is known about the role of NDH in WWII and what they did to Serbs in Croatia back then. I think that is the source of the war that started in 1991 because what Croatian government did in WWII was beyond words. What worries me the most is that I see it still being present among younger generations, it is still being passed on.

I have never been in Bosnia - you probably know what is it like over there better than me though...I am not sure to what extent nationalism thrives there.

Well that is interesting :) It reminds me of the history of the letters - A from (Hebrew) aleph meaning bull, B from beth meaning house, G from gamel meaning camel etc, and they all in their original forms really did look like bull, camel, etc, but then through through the course of time ended up looking the way they do now.

Sjajno! multimesc! We are now back on track!
Mislim..... The 2 songs you have found to me. They were really good, "you hit my nerve" Especially Dani marsan, he was good!

I know the history of NDH and Ustasa. They very extremely vicious during WW2.
We can again conclude that the young generation dont know enough about history and that makes it more likely that history will repeat itself first as tragedy and then as a farce. Or someting like that

When the talk is about the developed north versus the not so developed south then, if I am to use this dichotomy then I must admit that I was surprised to see that one could get an asperger diagnosis in Croatia! I was maybe a bit ethnocentric. But at least you understand that it is possible to have doubts regarding how high the science habitus in Croatia is. I mean if the political climate is immature then why not also other areas?

And the android thing. I also like blade runner a lot. And Ridley Scott is one of my favorite instructors. Androids are much easier for aspies to relate to :D . I sometimes wish that they existed in reality, then I would hang out with them and analyse foreign language.

About hebrew. I can tell you as a bonusinfo that hebrew and arabic are not mutual intelligible, like e.g. chezh and slovak. It reminds me of an episode here in our lovely highly developed country :D , one time a bosnian man told me that he could communicate with polak people even when they were speaking eachother languages, nonsens! :wall: He must have been a "seljak" I should have said to him: Idi i muzi kravu!

Well you are the first foreigner I talked to who actually knows what happened :) Most of the people here don't, or don't want to know. We haven't been taught that - I know solely because I made a research on my own. Our former president Tuđman even wrote a book in which he tried to diminish the number of victims. But the goal was certain - to either remove, exterminate or convert Serbs from Croatia. I tried to see the reasons for such atrocity - but couldn't really find it, but it seems that the Croats were the first who started it.

I honestly hope it won't happen again though - or that external forces won't allow it to happen.

Well if you are referring to me, then actually I struggled to find anyone to talk to since there are no centres for it here, not even medical personnel knows - so I went to the Psychology centre at my Uni and asked there for their opinion, and they confirmed my suspicions. But otherwise a diagnosis is almost impossible to get, yes.

And you weren't being wrong about it - science habitus here indeed needs a lot of improvement, especially investing in education. People here mostly invest in football, politicians and pop stars. This isn't a place for an Aspie, or anyone a bit more universally oriented. I suspect that things are much better in Denmark, or anywhere in Nordic countries.

Heh, no way he could have understood Polish - I met some Polish people and we only used English. Sure, there are some common words, but otherwise it is very much unintelligible for us, at least in spoken language. Written can be understood to a certain point though.

I must admit that I have to get help from google translate with my romanian. But I think it's ok when one is lazy like me and I really learn by doing that

Actually I know a lot of your history, which I have to beacuse I have a B.A in serbocroatian... Wierd  I know

But then again, the slavic department in Århus Denmark was a very good place for an aspie. Very quiet and very few people.

My B.A project was about the battle in 1389 at the kosovsko polje with Lazar Milos Obilic and the turks of course. It didn't interest me but I had to write about something :? .

I wish I could have written about Lepa Brena concerts in Bulgaria or something similary which is 100 times more interesting for me. :)

si, dar imi place jazz si muzica clasica si rock.....:)

I use GT at times as well

Well I find that fascinating that anyone would bother with getting a BA from serbo croatian! I guess I don't consider us to be that much interesting. You probably know more than me now :) especially about Serbian history. I guess I am really not interested in these countries here any more - for numerous reasons.

Lepa Brena used to be hugely popular here :) I think she even had her own doll like barbie doll. Very nice person from what I have seen on the interviews.

i guess you have been to her concerts? :)

I have actually never been to any of the fantastic Lepa brena concerts. I wish I had. But I dont think I would give my left or right kidney away for it :P

I am really curious about how good you are at rumanian. I dont know if you know the common european framework ? common european framework At what level would you rate yourself? Va rog!

Here is a joke for you:
Idu dvojica preko mosta i vide Hasu kako gleda u vodu i place:
- Zasto places, Haso?
- Burek mi pao u vodu
- Burek? A, s cime?
- S bratom!

Well I think somewhere around B1. I am pausing this year because of the baby so don't really have much chance to study it extensively. How come you started to learn Romanian by the way?

haha ti s Mujom i Hasom su mi najbolji

Posvađali se Mujo i Fata, i tako prolaze autom pored nekog svinjca, pa Mujo upita Fatu:
"Je li ženo, jel ovo neka tvoja familija".
A Fata mu odgovori:
"Jest, svekar i svekrva".

Sunt foarte bine duamna!

U Danskoj nema nove. A u Hvratskoj?

Here is a song about the lovely Dalmacia for you, I really dont think the grammar is very good :D

Dalmacio! eve mene zagrli me, uvik te nedostavoh srce svoje u dalmatinskih oci

More nase plave oci brodovi i brdovi, svugda su stari svijezdi okolo lipo more nase!

Evo nase stare mornare s uspomenama svojim da se pade u vodu!

U vodi i u nocima stare ribe pjevaju i odlete do svjijezde nase

That was it! I hope you enjoyed it.. :D

I really dont think you want to know how I started to learn romanian! Veoma je cudno

Ok.. Hajde istina na sunce... last summer I worked as a maid 8O in a hotel here in my town (Vejle) I mainly worked with rumanian and polish people. As I already knew some polish and wanted to learn a new language, I began to learn rumanian so I better could communicate with all the rumanian people. And also to impress them a bit! I mainly used pimsleur in order to learn romanian.

But I really dont have enough interest for the romanic languages, I would want to get to A1 in rumanian but right now I'm struggling and using much time to get to B1 in both bulgarian and farsi.

I think its nice that you are on B1 in romanian, it takes quite some time to get there.
The really hard journey is to get from B1 to B2 ! But... I believe it can be done with the "10.000 sentences method"
At least I'm going to try it on farsi. My language courses and all that stuff can only bring me to B1. from there on its sentences with a dictaphone like the video I linked to you with Mike Campbell.
I can also recommend that one uses a little time on researching this man's methods

He is a world famous polyglot and he speaks 50 languages!

Now I know what "svekar i svekrva" means, I had to look those words up in Bensons dictionary
But I understood your joke. it was funny
Here is another one for U

Ulazi Mujo u gostionicu i pozdravlja se sa konobarom.
- Hocu jednu ledenu pivu!
Konobar ga pita:
- Hoces u limenci?
- Ne, hocu ovjde!
