I suppose Syd Barrett was Aspic. Possibly schizo, but wildly imaginative and always mixing children's things with blurred drug references. The first two Pink Floyd albums have some of his material, but you really have to listen to his later albums to really appreciate how unique the man was.
The sad thing about him was by the time they were working on their second album the other guys were trying to learn his songs and sing his lyrics while he just stood on stage and stared. He'd chime in once in a while but they said it was a really weird experience singing his songs right in front of him like that. Also yeah, he had schizophrenia and in a way that couldn't have been helped at the time at least, very degenerative in nature. Listing to Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the energy that went into that cd was very original, very um...lysergicly influenced but in a much more experienced and deep way that I'd heard with Sgt. Pepper with the Beatles - main reason was the Beatles were just tripping some of the time, that kind of reality I think was probably Sid Barrett's world for a while 24/7.
