Agreed..although if there were covers with Mikael Akerfeldt, that'd be truly amazing. The only thing Death lacked was a good vocalist, and I could at least understand him, more than I can say about many metal bands.

Schuldiner was a god amongst metal vocalists, Akerfeldt has seemingly abandoned the death growls now. Which is a real shame, because he mixed death growls with clean vocals brilliantly.

While your at it, try this... http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt217441.html

Pretty sure he actually lost his growl voice. If you listen to the latest Bloodbath DVD and Opeth shows circa 2011, he basically stopped growling properly and replaced it this awful sounding grunty noise.

I heard the opposite, but it would explain things. Growls damage the vocie over time, why i don't understand metal fans who hate all singing in metal.

Just compare this:

To this:

It's like it pains him to even try. Blakkheim actually sounds more brutal.

Thankfully he's stepped down from Bloodbath so hopefully they get someone even more brutal to replace him.

Damn, he sounds like crap on the second video. Luckily I like newer Opeth...

Sure, but only if Morbid Angel's "Angel of Disease" is at the top of your list.

Great to see some replies.
Possessed’s “Seven Churches” and Entombed’s “Left Hand Path” were definitely two monster albums that I had to take time considering for my list.
Also props on the Eucharist mention, it’s definitely melodic death metal done the correct way! The production and mix on "A Velvet Creation" is absolutely flawless.

Hmmmm..I think it’s time for a thrash thread..

Hmmm. a thrash thread would be absolutely tough to predict, the 80's was the golden age of thrash. Failing that, a top 5 albums for each year thread would be pushing it!

Lexington, you're joking right? The best thrash has been of late....Death Magnetic, new Testament, Evile, Confined (old band before they became Scars of Life), recent Exodus and Threat Signal (they have thrash guitar) do way better I think.

I do listen to some '80s Metallica though...albeit remasters.

Difference of opinion, guess some people like the raw production of the 80's to the polished production of today.

Not the production to me as much as it is that most thrash metal vocalists are awful...luckily, some of the bands are changing that now. Always was a big fan of the instrumentation. Only bands I give a pass on bad vocals for though are Death and recent Exodus.

Rob Dukes is not that bad vocal-wise for Exodus, their recent albums since 2004 have been nothing short of solid thrash metal helpings. Less said about Force of Habit, the better...

Exhibit A has my interest. His vocals aren't truly bad, just grating over long periods of time.

The latest Testament album is pretty sick.

Definitely up there with The Formation of Damnation.
