Dismissing entire genres is silly, but is it silly to state that I hate top40 pop music? Most of the music that I specifically hate falls into this category, but of course there are "pop" songs I like that probably were on the top40 chart at some point, albeit with different sorts of elements to them that make them more distinguishable. I guess what I really hate are the sort of songs that sound the same, are overproduced, have some dumb lyrics about love, sex or partying, and aren't sung by the people who wrote them. You know, the kind of crap you hear when you turn on the radio.

True much of the top 40 is pretty awful. I just had a look at the UK top 40 and its pretty irredeemable. Might have to print it just so I can burn it and scatter the ashes in a stagnant pool somewhere. What sucks is the fact that at one point Love Genesis Sly and the Family Stone Marvin Gaye Flaming Lips and the rest were considered popular music. Im not entirely sure what to make of the music industry at present. There is alot of amazing music out there but for some reason the mainstream taste has been corrupted.

Depeche Mode are a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine in that they are technically a "pop" band and they have written a few cheesy love ballads, but they've also written tons of great music that has a lot more depth to it than what you'd normally hear on the radio, and even the love ballads tend to have more actual emotion to them than what other groups have done. Not to mention, back in the 80s especially, they were well noted for coming up with all sorts of ingenious ways of making new and creative sounds, rather than simply relying on pre-canned samples and synth presets. They've also been a huge inspiration for a lot of my other favorite bands, everyone from Linkin Park, to Deftones, to Nine Inch Nails, and even Rammstein.

If you want to hear DM at their best, listen to the albums Music for the Masses, Some Great Reward, or Violator. Black Celebration is pretty good too, though it is a little bit weaker than the others I've mentioned. Actually, Music for the Masses, in particular is one of my all-time favorite albums, and it is quite avant-garde in a lot of ways.

Something to think about from someone who grew up in the grunge era and how what was hated then, is embraced now. Grunge, Pearl Jam in particular, is hugely successful, as it was in the grunge era. However, Eddie Vedder's pompous, backhanded liberalism has always disgusted me. And I'm a tree hugger. However, I did like some of the songs like "evenflow" and "alive." Has that band escaped the hate for grunge that people have mentioned here?

Now rewind. In the mid nineties, people hated all 80's music (almost) and especially the hard rock acts that are now referred to as hair metal. Now I get on youtube, and see teenagers complimenting bands like Winger, which I was almost afraid to listen to (as an early teen) because I might like them. I'm amazed no one in this thread has listed hair metal as the most hated. It was at the head of the list by a long shot back then. It was ruff when people found out I liked bands like Slaughter, Mr. Bigg, and Def Leopard.

I like some of Pearl Jam's stuff but I never been a huge fan.

I like 80s music & hair metal & wasn't aware hair metal was hated in the 90s. Beavis & Butthead was popular then & they liked it.

I thought Beavis and Butthead were thrash metal fans and made fun of this one kid for liking hair metal. I could be wrong though, I haven't seen too many episodes, but it was a pretty funny show. Shame it's hard to find episodes in the original format with the music videos attached.

Yeah they were more into trash metal & made fun of Stewart for liking Winger(I like it) & some hair metal but they alot about it & seemed to like some. I totally agree about wanting to find eps if the original format with the vids.

Death metal is a pretty unpopular genre among most people, but I love it. Black metal and thrash are cool too. To the new and uninitiated, bands like Cannibal Corpse and old Mayhem will sound like pure chaotic noise. But this music has an underlying order and requires a lot of talent to excel in. I think aspies are in a unique position to appreciate it because of our talent for finding patterns and noticing details that other people miss.

meshuggah. If patterns and logic are your thing look at some analyses of their polyrhythmic work

R&B.
Not from nowadays, but the old, original R&B. The better version.
I find R&B from nowadays annoying and humorous.
Nowadays it sounds more like annoying electro & techno music with terrible lyrics.
