I'm in a similar situation to the OP, I have a very short list of anime that I really like and will marathon once a year or so, but I very rarely find anything new. Just don't give up hope and keep looking and maybe one day you will find one that really speaks to you.

One thing I will say is don't feel pressured to like the anime that are really hyped and are supposedly the best, as this will just put you off anime altogether. There may also be an anime that you like that is harshly criticised. It might be good to find a 'gateway' anime so that you can gradually get used to the standard anime tropes so they don't bother you as much. Death Note, Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist are often cited as good candidates for this.

Also, some hardcore anime fans will slam me for saying this, but I find it easier to watch dubbed anime. If a given anime has no dub or was dubbed particularly poorly (cough cough 4kids), I will watch it subbed, but for someone just getting into anime, I would recommend watching it dubbed if possible.

You seem similar to me in that I'm guessing you should get into sci-fi Anime. Just drag my user pic to Google Images...

I have never been into anime. A lot of it gives me a headache.

I really like animes but everyone of us is different. It's not a bad thing that you aren't a fan of it. You just have other interests.

Nothing wrong with not liking anime. I personally love anime. If you like crime related shows, then as stated earlier in this thread, Psycho-Pass is a good one, and it's on netflix in English. Same with Death Note.

I will third the recommendation for Psycho Pass.
Psycho Pass is a slightly futuristic crime drama (similar to Person of Interest).

I'm not really that into anime. I'm more into other animated shows, like South Park, and game shows.

I think the only anime I ever really liked was Ghost in the Shell. DBZ, I sort of watched for a short bit, but it became really repetitive to me, so I stopped. I much prefer watching dramas on tv instead of anime, but don't hold anything against those who like anime.

I understand, I don't see the appeal, I think it's because I struggle with subtitles, but feel like a fraud if I watch dubbed versions, so I just avoid it completely

Update: It's been 8 months since I posted here to say I can't get into anime.

My favorite show of all time is the half-anime web-series, RWBY, in which I just finished its third volume/season.

The art and humor is generally anime inspired, but definitely has a far more western-animation influence over it, as it IS American.

There are a few flaws with it, but I generally think it's a very good series, especially since the third season.

I just googled it and it looks like some sort of weeaboo-milking machine.

I'd suggest actually watching it.

It did start out with a lot of anime cliches, but the series fleshed out and the characters all developed their own unique personalities.

It is quite flawed in the early seasons - the animation is average, as is the writing.

What's got to be remembered is RWBY was produced independently, by a very small team, and they had very short deadlines to finish an episode with a very difficult animation style (the 3-D style they use is harder than actual anime to animate). The main writer, Monty Oum, had little experience with writing an anime series, and the other two writers were the writers of Red vs. Blue, but were out of their comfort zones. The soundtrack was the best feature of the early seasons, as the main composer and his daughter had plenty of experience already.

Season/Volume 3 is a series high point for me.

Also, the first two seasons, the overall story is slow to develop, but it's all building up to season 3 where most of the information from season 1 and 2 is revealed.

Finally, yes the cast is strongly female but there's plenty of males that get a near-equal amount of screen-time. Jaune is the lovable everyguy hero.

For all it's flaws, I think the show has always had one thing - heart.

That's completely fine, I like anime myself, but not everyone's into it, so I can respect that. Everyone has opinions!

I like anime, at least what I've seen of it, but I've never really had the attention span to pay attention to any sort of an overarching story for more than a couple days at the most. I'm the same way with most other series I've watched, just don't have the attention span to get into them over a long period of time. 'Tis a curse of mine, because I hear about all these other people getting into TV series and binge watching and obsessing over them, and I get kind of jealous. I sort of know what it feels like, but I can't maintain it over a long period of time the way other people do, I just go through phases with things way too quickly and find myself obsessing over different things every few days.

Right now, I'm going through a bit of a Zootopia phase (unrelated since it's a single feature film and not anime, I know), though I can sort of already feel it starting to fade. Then again, I talked my dad into going to see it some time, and I can't wait for my next chance to catch it in the theatre again. I love that goddamn movie, especially with the great eye candy and cute, fun characters that it has.

I honestly think I'd be much happier with my life if I were able to focus on things more easily without getting sidetracked.
