So, yeah... Had to cool down a bit. Writing that list made me feel better. As you can see, I'm waaaaaay into video game music!
A Show of Hands
Nice, and unexpected! My take on Rush's discography has always held their entire output from 1980-1989 in the highest esteem, including the vastly underrated 'Power Windows' and 'Hold Your Fire'. 'A Show of Hands' is an excellent (pre-'Presto') snapshot of one of their more overlooked musical eras.
I just saw Rush two nights ago, but I'm lucky to have seen them on their 2012-2013 tour when they busted out quite a few songs from the '82-'87 albums.
U2
Peter Gabriel
Steeley Dan
King Crimson
Sufjan Stevens
Sigur Ros
Are you a fan of Pop, Zooropa, or the Passengers album? How about you, Kraftie?
I'm also a big Steely Dan fan. Even the two reunion albums, which a lot of fans don't seem to care for.
I know the question wasn't directed at me, but it's late and I'm bored. 'The Joshua Tree' is an amazing piece of work and I have no hesitancy calling it one of my favorite albums of all time, but I have never been able to get into any of U2's other albums to any similar extent. 'War' is the only other album I could say I liked and could still remember a few hours after listening, but it still falls short of 'TJT'.

I forgot you were on the West Coast I'm up for the day and the sun is out, so I was confused for a second.
U2 is a band it took me a long time to appreciate. I don't think they're one of the all-time greats, but they've done some great work. I will agree about The Joshua Tree. I also love War. For me, the difficulty in getting into them has been their lyrics, which are often generic. I start to feel a physical annoyances when Bono uses cliches and very general imagery (i.e., "Love is like the sun, but feels like the rain..."). I don't know if you can relate or that's partly why you find some of their stuff unmemorable.
However, I'm a huge fan of the albums I listed. Like a lot of bands (the Beach Boys or Grateful Dead, for example), I had to stop thinking about U2 as a cultural phenomenon to really appreciate them. Zooropa's a clever little album full of great songs, especially a song like "Baby Face," where they sing about people relying on pornography over human connection. It's no surprise that the song is interesting because they're being specific. When Bono aims for universal appeal by using very simple lyrics, he fails because the songs are too general, and he sounds like he has nothing to say. Taken as just a collection of music, the album is very engaging. Seen as an album by some iconic super band, it can underwhelm. I'm not saying that your view of them is wrong (obviously you appreciate some of their work); just describing my own perspective.
Are you a Brian Eno fan? I'm guessing you are. You may like Original Soundtracks 1 by Passengers, which is an album he made with the members of U2. It is to U2 what My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is to David Byrne and Talking Heads. You may like it more than the official U2 albums of that time period.

I saw Steely Dan in concert about 20 years ago. Lots of fun!
Have to think about the U2 albums.

I can separate a band's work from any kind of expectations, cultural or otherwise. I judge an album on its own objective merits as well as by my own subjective tastes, whether it's an album hugely acclaimed, virtually unknown, a debut from a brand new band or the 20th album by a 40 year-old group.
Bono's lyrics don't really bowl me over but they don't irritate me, either. Out of all their albums, I felt 'The Joshua Tree' just had the better-crafted songs, strongest hooks and best-sounding production. It's an immediately striking album in sound and atmosphere, and most of all its thoroughly consistent from start to finish. However, I like rich, textured melodic soundscapes, so when U2 started getting more into harder rock, dance, industrial, etc. afterwards, I just naturally lost more interest. U2 as a whole just doesn't really appeal to me, but the sounds on 'Joshua Tree' appeal to my own tastes in music.
I'm a big fan of Brian Eno, and even more so David Byrne. I'll look up the Passengers material.
