You mean Speak and Spell?

I though A Broken Frame had a lot better synths.

I always wanted the synths they used in it, like the Jupiter-8, Roland Systems 100, and PPG Wave 2.3.

I am, though admittedly I haven't heard near enough of their work.

I love Alphaville. Always thought of them as Depeche Mode's less commercialized cousin.

Many of these bands that allegedly had 'better' synths also used used the JP-8, PPG Wave, and Roland Systems 100.

The songwriting on the Broken Frame was poor, even Martin said it on an interview, but the synths still stand up today as one of the finest analog synths ever made.

IMHO Enjoy The Silence is a fantastically good song, one of my favorites from that era in music - there's been some good covers of it too like Hybrid's.

Liked a lot of their other stuff as well but for me that one song stands above the rest.

Depeche Mode is awesome. They were my favorite band as a kid. I listen to their music and still like it, along with The Rolling Stones (everything else I listened to I don't care for when I became an adult).

I like their song Suffer Well best!

I think I'm just a sucker for dark synth. Covenant and Depeche Mode are two of my favorites for that genre.

Covenant is probably my favorite dark synth band though, especially because their songs are based off science fiction novels.

Enjoy the Silence is what got me into DM. I remember listening to it repeatedly over a course of six hours when I heard my grandfather had a stroke (or was it cancer?). Anyway, great song from a great album.

Some of my other favorite DM tracks include "Blasphemous Rumours", the Some Bizarre Album version of "Photographic", "Stripped", "To Have and to Hold", "Halo", "Clean", "Never Let Me Down Again", "A Question of Time", "Strangelove", "Behind the Wheel", "Master and Servant", "Fly on the Windscreen", "Somebody", "Christmas Island", and of course the famous "People Are People".

Whew, that's quite the list. Probably most of their 80s singles right there.

Yes, the early years of Depeche Mode, the late 70s and early 80s, before MIDI was invented. I prefer the 100% VCO Analog and CV-Gate era of synthesizers. Crumar Performer, Jupiter-4, SH-2, CR-78, CS-50, SK-20, Moog Prodigy, etc..

I have a CV-gate to MIDI controller. Works like a charm!

Not my absolute favorite, but I like them. They are a strong influence to most of the more modern bands I like. I like the dark synth sound.

I have heard of Depeche Mode many times. After seeing this thread, I listened to "Violator" to hear what all the fuss was about.

Holy crap!

I don't usually like electronic music but upon second listen, I think I can tell that this is probably one of my favourite albums of all time.
