That's exactly the point I've been trying to make. I'm not against diversity, I'm against diversity for the sake of diversity. The problem is you can't say that without being labeled a white supremacist KKK member. I've had people throw fits about my writing because it doesn't have enough [insert minority of choice] characters in it. They ask, "Why can't she be black?" or "Why can't he be gay?" and I always reply, "Why should they be? The story's the same either way."

That argument doesn't work on them either, btw. That just makes them think you're just doing it out of spite.

Yes, it is quite dangerous in my opinion when a generation of people cares more about diversity of skin color or sexuality more than diversity of ideas (aka freedom of speech). People should stop this rabid desire to put labels on each other, it really is troubling. And unfortunately, as you mentioned, it can be hard to reason with this type of person. They are utterly convinced that all that is good is on their side, so when they are presented with the contrary, they respond mostly with name-calling instead of using logical arguments.

The ironic thing is that these people who are putting labels on everything and dividing everybody are the same ones who will claim they're trying to eliminate labels and diversity.

Ironic indeed. The true ones who are working to eliminate labels are the people who just don't give a sh**

I actually care about racial representation in movies/television/entertainment in general, but I think putting a random out of context black character and highlighting it isn't representation. Diversity is something we should aim for, but we can't force it, and it doesn't make sense to care about it exclusively on entertainment.

I guess the scenario is a bit different in USA, it seems that there is many shows that feature black people, I'm from Brazil and despite more than half of the country is black or mixed, you can't guess it by the TV or mainstream cinema, now it's slowly changing, I think it's cool it will be different in a while.

It's a bit absurd that, for example, one of the main works about slavery – it's originally a book, but there is two or three TV adaptations – features a slave that is white, although there wasn't white slaves in Brazil. I mean, people wouldn't like a black protagonist. Also, we have a huge asian population, and TV often puts white people to play asian roles (that aren't frequent).
