Yes the gate-keeping analogy might also be relevant to online groups. People who know each other for years online might be more likely to screen a newcomer and put up shutters or resist engaging. In the latter persistence might pay-off demonstrating to the group your passions/interests (investing your time/efforts) and willingness to join/be part off their online club.

That's it's function. But using an open-ended question does not guarantee that conversation will follow unless the intended target for the question is willing to open up to a stranger.
