There was a thread on AITA Reddit asking if someone is an as*hole for threatening to kick their sister out of their apartment because she wouldn't stop washing her undies in his washing machine and he mentioned he washes no underwear in his machine. People on twitter were arguing about rather the sister should follow his rules or not and some others were making jokes about it by posting their inane rules about their washing machine or their vacuum as a joke. Someone brought up about this being cultural so that is why I made this thread. I am interested in UK life.

Maybe it's another culture to British?

Although which one? Not Scottish, English, Welsh, American or Polish, we know that much.

Tbh whatever culture it is sounds a bit dirty lol. Without a washing machine you're not getting stuff clean enough.

The bulk of our family washing is undies. Esp mine and my stepdad's. It's the stuff that gets dirty every time you wear it. T shirts in summer do the same as well due to sweat.

My thoughts are either:
1 it's another culture to anyone who's replied yet
2 it's a made up story like a lot of AITA stories are
3 she didn't live with him full time and he took umbridge at her using his washing machine instead of going home and using her own. For eg I don't live with my granddad. When I get changed at his, I put my underwear in a travel bag & wash it when I get home. It would be cheeky for me to put his stuff in a washing machine* (Only exception is when our washing machine wasn't working and it was seen as a huge favour ). I can see that being a problem if someone is a guest and decides to use the washing machine.

* Is this cultural? Do other cultures visit people and use their washing machines like for eg we use the baths of people whose homes we visit?

If I stay at someone's place for a few days, it can happen that I ask for access to washing machine if something unplanned happened and/or I may soon run out of clean clothes. If my friends come to my place and e.g. go biking in the forest and come back all wet and muddy, I offer them some spare clothes while washing theirs.
When I was officially living at my parents' but could spend several days at my boyfriend's, I washed my pants in his washing machine, together with wathever his or his sister's dirty clothes were fit for washing with them.

Undies go in the washing machine like all other clothes.

He made an arbitrary rule and his sister didn't obey it for a variety of practical reasons. The end.

The UK canal boaters I follow on YouTube certainly do not wash them in the canals.

I live on a narrowboat, and yes, all bedding, clothing, towels, shoes, hats, tea-towels etc. get washed in a washing machine!

I don't understand why you wouldn't? Everything comes out clean, so what difference does it make?

I wash my Y fronts in the washing machine.

Happens a lot on AITA.

Those people (if we take their stories as true) take 'my house my rules' about as literally as an aspie...

I mean yeah, your house your rules but that's only for reasonable stuff like how some people wear shoes indoors and some people don't...

But the funny thing is us aspies don't take a rule seriously unless it makes sense. What logic reason is there against washing undies in the washing machine? Water washes out of it, water rinses it out. Of course the sister isn't complying because the rule makes zero sense. It's more logical to understand why shoes must not be worn indoors, shoes are dirty and they will get the floors all dirty, the house owner does not want to be washing floors each time.

So everyone in the Reddit thread is telling the OP this is a power trip thing.
