First of all, they didn't have a bassist. No bass frequency=sh***y hollow garage sound. Everyone knows that. Secondly, the music consisted of random drumming and a guitar with so much tremolo effect lathered on it that you couldn't even hear the notes. There was somewhat of a melody going on that was pretty decent, but it sounded terrible with the trem and the no bass. I offered to play bass for them (I was bored) and they said they didn't need a bassist. I was like, yeah ok. I can't wait to see what your album sounds like . He was like "oh, you will. It's gonna be huge." About a week later the band broke up. I was like, "lol."

Anyway, that's my amusing anecdote of the day. Thanks for reading the whole thing, if you did.

FWIW, The Doors didn't have a bassist. Just an observation.
Ned's Atomic Dustbin had two bassists, which I found kinda interesting. But I haven't heard much from Ned lately.

It is completely reasonable to be a music snob. I am. People listen to terrible music.

I think it is bad when someone is a snob about music when they themselves listen to bad music (a lot of people who listen to indie and emo).

I listen to a lot of progressive rock, avante garde, and extreme death metal that takes creativity and skill to write and play and I can damn well say that it is better than what the majority listens to.

But when you find someone who listens to a band because no one else does or because they are underground (indie) chances are they are going to suck.

And mathrock sucks.

the beatles, the rolling stones and led zep suck.

seriously any band that makes it mainstream sucks.

only bands that hold themselves back, or that suck make it.

ever hear of bubblemath? no, they are too good to make it big.

good music doesn't get played. people want to hear music thats easy to listen to, and music that is easy to listen to is boring and sucks.

sorry but i find this hilarious.

meh. different strokes for different folks. They have a saying in Brasil, i guess most places have something similar:
What would be of blue if everyone liked green.
Something like that, anyways, everyone has their tastes.

sorry I just find all three bands to be completely overrated, especially since I can write music around their music.

I found that most people don't actually listen to music, when I listen to music I LISTEN to it. I can't be doing anything else. 100% attention to the music.

I understand why people like boring music like the beatles etc... its because they can put it on in the background etc...

Plus its easy on the mind.

Me, I like to be challenged. I listen to music like how an English major would read a novel.

Well I understand what you are saying, but I think it is possible to do even with "mainstream" music, for lack of a better word. One clear example, the very first one I can personally recall, is the bass line from The Eagles "Hotel California". I don't know about others, but I can separate it and here it distinct from the accompanying instruments. And I think it is rather enjoyable. At times I just "hear" music, have it playing in the background, and at times I will "listen", have nothing else and devote it my full attention.

That being said, I do agree with the sentiment that many people "like" groups for no other reason than that is "what they have been told to listen to" by "experts" and "critics".

To your statement that you can write music around their music, that may very well be. you may find people who prefer your music to theirs, and that is their opinion, and you will find people who will prefer the other. I am not a Picasso fan at all, but some people think he was the greatest of the 20th century. I am a Raphael fan, but there are those who think he is no more than another artist for the time period. When it comes to Music, Art, Literature, alot of it is personal taste.

Here's a widely divergent and very limited list of bands that could be considered 'Indie'.

Shellac
Ruins
Boredoms
Radiohead
Modest Mouse
McClusky
Super Furry Animals
Minutemen
The Wipers

Indie Music is essentially music that is quite uncategorisable, and also outside of mainstream major music labels, as well as commercial Radio Formatting, hence the term 'Indie'. --Outside of the mainstream commercial music.

Personally I prefer indie and quite obscure music due to the fact that I listened to a lot of the Classic Rock stuff when I was a kid. -- I want to hear something differant.

Math rock basically refers to rock bands who regularly use irregular beats rather than mostly or always using a 4/4 beat in their songs.
At least that's what I've gotten out of the few things I've read on it.
I'm not sure, but I think BATTLES is an example of a math rock group?

I'm not familiar with BATTLES, however Ruins/ Koenji Hyakkei is definately Math Rock. Shellac can also be somewhat Math-y at times.

I think Don Caballero is a good example of math rock. Battles are also described as math rock.

More on topic, I hate music 'elitists'. I've had people mocking various aspects of my musical taste as if theirs is much better because they listen exclusively to one genre and any genre outside that is rubbish.

I know. I can't stand it when people criticize the music that another person listens to for being too popular or (in the case of genres like techno, synthpop, disco, etc.) "too gay".
I mean, there's no problem with criticizing an artist or style of music based on artistic merit or lack thereof, but criticizing it for being too popular at the moment (there are plenty of decent bands/artists who their former fans won't listen to because they've "sold out"), too retro-popular, or "too gay" (whatever that means) is just stupid.
btw I like the sig. Both Psychic TV and Throbbing Gristle are awesome. Genesis P. Orridge is a genius.

math rock is NOISE music. I am pretty sure that is how wikipedia describes it. It's not very impressive at all.

If you want bands that use complex sigs and write WELL WRITTEN music listen to Gentle Giant, Bubblemath, Dream Theater....
