It is funny . . . I often wonder the same thing about "Rap".

 Just don't call it "music".

I haven't been in years, but I used to enjoy going out to karaoke. Now I like to sing karaoke at home. Basically everything you could want to sing has a karaoke track up on YouTube.

Sometimes, even if the person can't sing, it can still be entertaining if they have fun with the song.

Mostly, I went to karaoke because I wanted to sing. Strangely, this is what led to my mother meeting my stepfather. When I was 15, I went to this pizza place to sing karaoke and my mother went along to listen to me, though she didn't sing herself. My future stepfather was there singing, too. So I guess I don't know if I like karaoke or not, LOL :D. My relationship with my stepfather over the years has been a mixed bag. Mom and I believe he may be on the spectrum too, though he doesn't think so. Later, when we all went to karaoke together, Mom would try to socialize with other people while my stepfather and I would pore over the songbooks, ignoring everything around us while we decided what to sing :D.

I've only been to a karaoke bar once, when people insisted on going there after opening night for a show I was in. It was an awful experience for me, but that's mainly because it was extremely loud and I had nowhere to hide, so I sat there with my fingers in my ears the whole time except for when I desperately took a drink between sets (I wasn't carrying earplugs with me yet; that would've made it at least less miserable). All I wanted to do was leave, and eventually I managed to get a taxi and go.

I don't really get it, either. I'd rather listen to the actual songs, if I like them at all, and a lot of the chosen songs I don't like anyway. It's just not my thing, I guess.

There is someone across the ravine who owns a karaoke machine and thinks he can sing.

I connected a 100W amplifier to my PC and blasted "Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida" for over an hour on his karaoke night.

Not a peep since.

 (That was 1 hour, 8 minutes, and 20 seconds worth of Iron Butterfly's finest!)

No, not really. I never sang karaoke, but I pie heard other people sing. I’d love to try it. I love to sing.

I don't think much of it since the neighbours across the road plugged in a karaoke machine and saw fit to sing (if that's what it is) at the top of their lungs until past midnight.

It seems to be more of a social thing than having a focus on singing.

I am a singer and I often find that when people sing the birthday song (not refering to Happy b-day) they ussually don't care about good singing. I care.
I also get frustrated if people choose low keys. I cant sing low.

When it comes to karaoke I wish people choosed a good key. People just sing it seems.
Some people just wanna do stuff without caring about whether they are good or not.

It's not an activity to be undertaken sober, that's for sure.

My ex-wife made me get up and sing "Mack the Knife" at my niece's engagement party this weekend. It's a song I have done at karaoke before, and i got to admit I did it pretty well on Saturday. I can carry a tune.

I love karaoke! Not that I've ever sang in a karaoke bar; I don't like bars and like drunken people even less. I sing at anime conventions and at the gatherings of the local anime club. Mostly Japanese songs.

Can I sing? ...No, not really. It's always the kind of karaoke that has a point system, so I can tell. But do I like singing? Yes I do, and I'm not nice enough to not sing in order to protect other people's ears.

I also like the atmosphere there... as in, why would anyone pay for bad seats in a theater or a sports mach when they could see it better from the TV? The answer: the atmosphere, or so I've been told. It feels good to be there, plus since it's anime karaoke, I can discuss about different series with people there. I can also hear new songs (this applies to all karaoke events) and get interested in new series (anime karaoke only) by seeing an interesting opening/ending theme when someone else sings it. I've started watching several series because of this.

The pitfall of karaoke is that you might also end up hearing songs that you hate being sang by other people as you wait for your turn... I hate it when people sing "Bakamitai", and for some reason that one is really popular. At least "Do you want to build a snowman?" is out of fashion by now.

Totally with you

Not only is not fun for me but being in a space where karaoke is going on is completely uncomfortable and I would have to leave.

If other people find it fun - good for them!
