It seems to be the case with other forums, too. I think people are mostly using bigger platforms these days.

True.

The forum is better than it was 5-8 years ago? In what respect?

I would say the forum activity level has decreased a lot during that time, at least.

As mentioned above this place is less toxic than it used to be. Not only the banned groomers but today we have civil disagreements about what Autism is and the neurodiversity movement. Back then there were a lot of openly expressed assumptions of nefarious motivations. There is less ageism both ways.

For a lot of us with executive functioning issues such as being bad at time management and multitasking less busy is a good thing.

Much less endless captcha loops and freezes/downtime which may be the result of less users.

If you want a nice social media, Mastodon is the one at present (how long it will stay like that, I don't know). It is literally full of autistic/ queer/ nonbinary people, and every other minority you can think of.

All my friends on Mastodon are: autistic; LGBTQ; disabled; people of colour; geeks. I didn't realise that til recently but they are.

It is the place for minorities, for want of a better word.

Sounds like a nice place. A lot of social media is full of normies nowadays. At least, on the more mainstream platforms.

It is a nice place. Over the weekend there were a lot of very upset Australians who voted Yes in their referendum but were defeated by 60% voting No.

They were saying 'thank god for Mastodon. I've built a community of like-minded people here and I can talk about the referendum. I wouldn't dare say all this on mainstream social media.'

And I thought, 'yes that's it. LIKE MINDED PEOPLE are on Mastodon.'

As I said, everyone seems to belong to a minority there so I fit in well.

Be aware it is full of lefties though, if you are a 'rightie'. lol.

And also, when I watch sport and chat to people on Mastodon, I don't get all the mansplaining, or hardly any. Which is a relief. In fact when I watched the rugby yesterday, most of the fans commenting were women or gay men!

Please reach out if you encounter paywall issues. This is about the only such site I actually subscribe to. I didn't copy it due to concerns over copyright.

I've enjoyed the article. WP seems like a ghost town at times.
