It is a little stiff but once you get up to hwy speeds it smooths out.

Nice, a Skyline.

I'm starting to set money aside for an FR-S or 86, but my current car is holding up so I'm not in any hurry.

My uncle ended up buying her another (used) Chevy Cruz.. probably got told his old car wasn’t new or safe enough for her toddler to be driven in. (It’s a 1995)

I think it’s Dumb af to buy a decent used car in this market because everything is astronomically expensive. Should have made do or bought a different beater to make do for a couple years, then buy something for half the price.

Oh well, at least it’s an econo car and they didn’t pay a hyper inflated price on a luxury car or anything like that.. so even if they paid $20k and it drops in had they only lose $10k vs 10’s of thousands on some marked up luxury car. Small win, I guess.

One thing about reliable pre-owned cars at least a few years-old is that these cars didn't come built with complicated TECH.

I hope to trade-up to a 2018-2020 hybrid Honda Civic from a 2018 gas-powered Civic with less than 35,000 miles.

my experience with hybrids is that they are chock full [the full hybrids, not the mild hybrids] of complicated EXPENSIVE technology and thus the insurance companies more readily "total" them in accidents resulting in higher premiums on average. the average hybrid will NOT pay for itself in reduced gas expenditures in its lifetime, despite what the automakers say. a toyota corolla gas model gets EPA-rated 40 miles per gallon, the typical hybrid gets only about 10 miles per gallon more at best. the newest mid-line prius is EPA rated @ 60 mpg but in real world driving gets around 50. for a car to "pay for itself" that figure would have to be at least 60 mpg.

Depends how many miles one puts on it in what timeframe.

When the Prius first came out almost every taxicab in the region switched to Prius and some of them drove over 1,000,000 kms on the original batteries. Putting that kind of mileage on a car I bet the fuel savings more than pays for the price premium - especially here where fuel costs a lot more.

Probably get a better roi on a used somewhat depreciated in value hybrid vs brand new math.

Right now prices be crazy. They’re asking $50k for a Corolla hybrid. I think they were $35k a few years ago.

Toyota isn’t going full EV like most brands. Instead they’re doubling down on hybrids and making some hydrogen powered cars. Hybrids make a lot of sense for some vehicle types and climates - especially very cold areas. The Edison Electric big rigs are even using the small diesel engines to circulate hot fluid to the batteries to keep them warm in the Winter - smart.

i had no idea a prius would go for that long, electrically or mechanically. i'd heard of gas 4 cylinder camrys giving up the ghost @300k miles.

I have the same philosophy as you when it comes to buying cars. I worked in the automotive industry for 4 years and learned a lot about cars during my time there. One things I learned was that new cars are overpriced and not worth the extra money. Why would I pay full price for new when I can buy a used car with 150,000KM for a fraction of the price with 50% or more of its life left in it? And I whole heartedly believe that everyone should drive their cars into the ground because it's not only better for your bank account its better for the planet too.

Also I would like to know how you got so many miles out of your vehicles, were you diligent with regular maintenance? Did you have to do any major repairs on these vehicles? I am assuming with those mileage numbers that you were buying Toyota or Honda?

Extremely conservative driving, and staying on top of oil changes. No "jack rabbit" accelerations - nice and easy. Watching ahead and slowing for redlights long before reaching them, so that I use brakes minimally. Choosing open road driving vs city (stop and go) driving, even if it means moderately longer routes. Oh - and yes, Toyotas. Although I did get 450,000 miles out of a 1990 Ford Ranger

can you tell me what all you did aside from conservative driving, to make your ranger last that long? and what made it finally give up the ghost?
