Check out Austin, where most of the liberals congregate in TX, you may find the culture a little different there, maybe you are close enough to actually visit and see for yourself. Lots of tech jobs right there, too.

Then there's the possibility of discrimination. Even if I was the most qualified candidate (which will probably never happen), I'll still get rejected due to my age. Employers want younger candidates who they can pay less and give fewer benefits to.

I have applied to the very few full-time GIS jobs there are, and I get the following reply, when I get a reply at all:

Quote:
While your qualifications and skills are impressive, we have decided to pursue candidates whose skills and qualifications more closely match the position.

If I applied to non-GIS positions, I would get rejected for not meeting the minimum qualifications.

My only hope is if an employer is extremely desperate, and I am the only person who applies.

It's not just politics, it's that there are cultural opportinities in NYC, SF and Seattle that would never see the light day in more conservative cities and states.

Imagine trying to build NYC's Museum of Sex or Seattle's Center for Sex-Positive Culture in rural Kansas, or trying to bring the artsy hipster or anarcho-punk subcultures to Pig's Knuckle, Arkansas.

I don't remember whether it's Seattle or Portland, but one of them has a Naked Bike Ride. Houston would never see that due to Abbott and Pals' strict laws against indecent (re: un-Christian) exposure.

The three aforementioned cities have independent film festivals. Houston doesn't even have a theater that shows indie films. The last one (Landmark River Oaks) closed in 2021.
Houston actually has an annual naked bike ride that has been around since 2011. https://htownwnbr.org/ And it has several indie theaters. Also has anarcho-punk, artsy and hipster scenes. Houston is a really great city for art. I understand how you feel, but you don't need to see things worse than they actually are.

Catastrophizing seems very common among posters here.

All my hopes hinged on a Harris victory.

Trump won, and unless I can emigrate to another country--even illegally--I no longer have a future.

Time will tell. Wait and see what their priorities are. They too, believe it or not, have gay , lesbian, transgender, Latino etc supporters that they don't wish to alienate, so Christian Nationalism is unlikely to become widespread.

People manage to flourish in various countries despite governments that they severely disagree with, provided these people keep things under the radar.

More people will be in jail because of all the things that will now be illegal (abortion, porn, marijuana, etc.) because of Trump and his enablers.

People will have purity culture crammed down their throats. I don't want to get married, but I don't want to be abstinent either.

How about moving to New England? Hartford CT is between NYC and Boston so one can go to cultural events in either city. I know a Lesbian who moved to the Hartford area decades ago, found a partner, and had a family! Also found a management position that she couldn't have gotten in Texas.

With global warming winters have become much milder than they were when I moved here a couple decades ago!
In the past few years I haven't needed a snow blower to clean the driveway and sidewalk. A snow shovel works just fine these days.

I can't afford that part of the country. I was already considering NYC, SF and Seattle, but now that Trump won, it wouldn't do me any good.

I have to leave the country--I'm considering Sweden. No Christian nationalism there. In fact, if you say that homosexuality is a sin, you can go to jail. They have very strict laws about hate speech.

Half a dozen towns where the medium income is under $50,000.

In practice, it is likely that local laws will take precedence over federal laws, much like how marijuana is legal in many places.

I've already begun unfriending friends and family members over their support of Trump.

I moved to Connecticut. It's difficult... but it's a great place. Join us, Tim!

Seattle is terrible, don't move here. The nearby cities are a lot better and you get most of the upsides.

The population growth has been managed terribly and the political scene is a mess. The area just can't accommodate the population growth with the incompetent people that are managing it. And a good chunk of the folks moving here bring their dysfunctional views with them, so the city winds up being a worst of both worlds city.

I hear people talk about "homeless people shooting up" up there. Is that actually true, or just hype from the far-right?

Yes it is true, at least in the downtown area of Seattle. Near the Pike Place Market I have seen several people shooting up in public on the sidewalks. Usually there is stolen merchandise being sold nearby on the sidewalk as well. I can only assume they are getting the drug $$$ selling shoplifted items. The Pike Place Market is considered by many to be a major draw for tourism, but the homeless, drugs, and crime problems around it shows that downtown is becoming a cesspool of filth and crime that many tourists are starting to avoid.

Still angry because of the possibility of all the things I do or want to do suddenly being illegal under Trump, where they would not have banned under Harris.

Which things are these that you think Trump and Co. is going to make illegal? I don't think Trump is going to make vices completely illegal nationwide. Heck, even he personally isn't the most fundamentalist religious person.

In sum, I don't think that much will change in terms of personal freedoms.

moving won't solve anything. as others have already pointed out, big cities are always a mixed bag with all sorts of different people around. (I used to live in Calgary, which is considered a right wing city, but still managed to go to gay bars and meet many creative interesting people with all sorts of weird interests). you just need to look under the surface to find them. maybe try joining a club related to one of your interests.

also, the fact that you're able to hold a job is a very positive sign. why not try a different line of work if you are unhappy with the current situation? if you already know that you have a good work ethic and have been successful in the past, then you should be successful in the future too.

and if for some reason the new job doesn't work out, you can always go back to the old one until you figure out something else. most people in our age group switch careers numerous times in our life.
