I like Linux Mint - Cinnamon. It is pretty good... They have a good active forum of expert users that can help with most anything, although, you really don't need much help with Linux Mint, these days, unless you are doing something exotic...or maybe play video games? That's not exotic, is it? :lol:

I don't know much about the other distros.

I would feel very confident putting Linux Mint on an old machine that could not run Windows 11. It is OK, there is nothing wrong with it... and it is free. I donated to the cause, a couple of years ago. I think it is a good idea to donate to help support the developers.
