I got tripped up today by how are you, but in the opposite way. I thought she was saying the greeting version, but she actually wanted to know. One thing that I was recently told is that there's another version of this complicated question. Sometimes, if they care about you, they do want to know, but they just want a brief, one-sentence summary.
