You are right but how would she know what my true readiness level is for marriage?

Only I can determine that, correct?

Not exactly. We can delude ourselves into thinking things about ourselves that might not be true at the time. Others with an outside perspective might be able to see things about us we can't. In some ways, that is the point of therapy also.

I think many of us might believe we are ready for a relationship or marriage because we want one, if nothing else because we want to be like others. But if we have never been in one, we don't know what they really take so we might not be as ready as we think.

Really?

So you are saying Anita and all the other people I am in contact with see something with me that I cannot?

But isn't that the purpose of pre-marital counseling?

To prepare you and your partner for marriage?

Premarital counselling was a complete joke. It was all religious, & it seemed maybe relevant to those that haven't actually thought out their future. It was more get-to-know-your-partner than actual discussions of how to manage married life. Huge waste of a weekend & the money. Perhaps yours will do a better job than mine did.

EtA: If you haven't had discussions on where you want to live, how you want to live, ideas worked out on kids (how many, how to raise, how to educate, etc), jobs (who's the main bread-earner, where are you willing to move to for their job, are they willing to move for your job, etc), birth control, health care, how to reconcile family differences, & so on, those are the conversations you need to have. Our counselling barely touched on real issues.

Well, my regular therapist is also my pre-marital counselor so it is working out very well for me

Just need to have David come with me to my appointments...but that might be kinda hard to do because of him being in Day Program or with his group home

Pre-marital counseling is supposed to be about preparing you and your husband for married life, correct?

Dating is for getting to know your partner!! !

There's the diff. Ours was required by & thru the church in order to get married in it. I wanted a church wedding (youth & dreams), so we jumped thru their hoops.

I implied that it is a possibility that some people might be able to see some things in us that we cannot see in ourselves. Not everyone, not in every area, but we do sometimes remain unaware of some aspects of our lives. Sometimes an outside perspective can be helpful. Self-Awareness is definitely a skill that takes practice and one that most of us aren't really taught at this point in history

I also told Anita about how I am slowly starting to search for my dream wedding dress since I'm now officially engaged

She said the way she picked hers out was by just buying the first one she tried on but it would be all too easy to just decide to purchase the very first wedding dress I try on without giving others a chance!! !

That takes away the fun of wedding dress shopping!
