^^^^ found an autodidact friend of mine ., Could not learn by he normal methods^^^^^
her best method of learning was physically only hands on ....And she was brilliant at what she did, when she learned that way. She was even held back a year. In elementary school. They had convinced her for life that she was hard to learn anything . And seemed to believe she was untrainable. She has keen observational skills .. I noticed these while I was physically teaching her to solder electrical circuits . It was an intense contrast to what she had told me. and seeing the way her parents had been dealing with her .. After that experience, she suddenly seemed to blossom. Taking on jobs that required intensive training . Moved up the financial ladder to a job that paid her 20.00/ hr to start back 5 years ago
Then night shift supervisor ..Then noticed her language skills took a big jump .. And even then if you are teaching someone it is not so much a persons ability to learn . But how they are being taught very often....
Noone knew she was a autodidact. until then ..imho.

Autodidact is a new term for me, but it's pretty clear that I am one. I suppose if anybody had been paying attention they'd have told me that years ago, but the Big People I met didn't have a broad enough outlook. So they concluded that I was just playing the fool and would one day wake up and realise it was too late for me to mend my ways. The only reason I used to fool about at school was because it was the only thing I could do well.

So the goals they set were impossible to do their way. To pass my exams I had to spend the final month studying the text books intensively. There was no continued assessment in those days so the tests they gave us over the years didn't matter.

I'd like to score a few goals this season. :skull:

How often do you set goals? Do goals give you structure or do they overwhelm you?

Best not to have them. Reduces the disappointment.

i gave up on goals, especially long term goals, a longfuck time ago, s**t.

too lazy and impatient, i guess. on the other hand, plenty of factors outside my control could derail my goals.

goals in the past i accomplished:
BA cognitive science
AA accounting
half a BS in structural engineering
driver's license
after getting evicted, found apartments without ending up homeless
got jobs

goals that i failed:
structural engineering
getting a "real" job
moving out of house
getting published

I suppose financial security would be a good goal for me, if it were achievable. There was a time when I had a lot of savings and felt pretty much secure, but due to circumstances beyond my control that's been spent down to a fraction of what it was. And as a house owner, I never know when the place might get dry rot or something else colossally expensive (I've barely maintained the place for decades), and that kind of thing can wipe folks out financially if they don't have a huge nest egg.

Ultimately there's almost no such thing as complete financial security. It's like chasing infinity. Even with massive wealth you never know that nothing will happen to remove that wealth or render it valueless. And with moderate wealth it's more precarious than that. You can insure some things, but there's no guarantee they'll pay up when things go wrong. Healthcare in the USA for example, normal insurance will only pay for so much. So if enough goes wrong with your body, you're bankrupt. House insurance - are you sure you've obeyed all their terms and conditions? If not, they might well not stump up.

So financial security is something I don't think I'll ever quite achieve. All I can do is try to beat off the individual wolves as they turn up at the door. Somehow I've always been able to afford food and shelter, so far. But everybody eats till the day they starve to death.

Used to be my biggest goal ,when in my late teens was getting a large Orange juice and a grill cheese sandwich 3-5 days aweek. Just a walk down the street ,1/2 mile ,one way. Considering the degree of disability at the time, it was a good accomplishment. And therapuetic . As well as being the main social event of the day. And it did not kill my finances .This went on for years . . . . Often I had to pay in change . But I did learn to ration my money, in the most strategic ways . :ninja: ....... ...... :D
