The only explanation now is that it could have been a double suicide with the pills.

But how would we explain the dog?

they had 3 dogs and only one was dead. Autopsy on dog should confirm pills. Perhaps they spilled the pills and one of the dogs ate one, but dogs normally don't consume things like pills so a bit strange one did and the others didn't.

It wasn't till well over a week that the bodies were discovered. Possibly the one dog starved to death while the other two managed to hang on.
