The thing is he is not responsible for the DSMV and the merging of profound autism leaving people with an IQ of 30 and unable to use a toilet alone with Asperger’s and possibly those with same symptoms as Ellon Musk and an attention seeking celeb.

Any government is going to be concerned if at face value they see something that is causing disability in a large percentage of the next generation rising sharply for whatever reason.

An intelligent solution for ND advocates would be to campaign for a proper re- writing of the DSM taking account of people’s needs and the separation of the seriously disabled from those just different.

Sadly most are only interested in a puzzle logo and a 15 year old autism speaks ad instead.

So what can anyone do?

“Just different” should not be in the DSM as the DSM is based on the medical model. There was a term that covered autistic traits but not enough to be diagnosed “Broad Autism Phenotype” but that term was confusing and a term that lay people never heard of. Indo not see the DSM changing anytime soon. When Asperger’s was subsumed it was such a controversy that why would anyone want to deal with that again?

“Just Different” is a red herring. Most people here and at ASAN and other ND movement advocacy groups have not said that in years. What is being said is do not stigmatize them(RFK) and accommodate them.

Off Topic
The puzzle piece and that old ad are distractions but from what I see these days. Elon Musk and the term Asperger’s is by far the biggest distraction. The revelations about Hans Asperger’s Nazi complicity were widely publicized seven years ago. The Autistic community should have figured out how to handle it by now. Not here but elsewhere it’s you say you have Aspergers, Asperger was a Nazi that coined the term(no he didn’t), Aspergers is not a diagnoses any more because Asperger was a Nazi(very few knew about Asperger’s Nazi complicity at the time), Musk is a Nazi, so if you say you are an Aspie you are a Nazi.

The ironic thing is that Musk has never weighed in on the topic. These purity test people are demanding everybody use Autism a term coined by an influential eugenicist and are often doing it on Musk’s platform(SMH).

Slightly confused ASAN and many ND advocates reject the medical model of autism preferring the social model, they openly say this.

BAP is probably an ideal label for those who`s impairments are heavily outweighed by any benefits and have no care needs. The examples of Anthony Hopkins, Ellon Musk or Bill Gates come to mind.

The problem up to now ND advocates try to maintain a contradictory view of benign difference v obvious disability in most, wanting to suppress and attack any info that reveals the more disabling and unpleasant side of autism, which RFK Jr voiced.

That is only sustainable for a short time or until a serious spotlight is put on it like now.

On a side note the left party of the UK just dropped the trans movement like a hot stone. It looks like a lot of these minority groups are falling out of favour throughout the western governments , maybe Neurodiversity is next.

The elites just use people and groups for a short while until they either get bored of them or no longer serve their purpose, it would be naïve to assume its just Trump and RFK Jr acting alone unaided or not pushed by bigger forces above.

Maybe the letter agencies quietly watching for a while in silence, saw the increase and determined its now a national security threat, impacting the US ability to compete with China militarily and economically in the future and RFK was picked as the person to do the job.

Again it would be naïve to assume serious people in authority, that no one has been watching the numbers increase in recent years and assume from the media that they are not real and the fact that most are unable to work or serve in the military has not crossed their mind or the future economic cost and impact on their power and its projection.

The media and everyone else are out of the loop as always and its just white noise

I mean he seems a nice guy but has been a political non entity in the wilderness for a long time with a voice disability that would ruin most political careers, anyone else could have done MAHA without the autism.

He was obviously picked for one reason only, for autism because his views are non mainstream.

Its rather obvious now thinking about it.

Phenotype is jargon. That is why the term “Broad Autism Phenotype” is confusing to lay people.

What RFK Jr misses for many of us is that we succeed despite life. Many of us weren't born with a silver spoon in our mouths, and we've had to take time to sort out who we are and how useful we can be in the world. Most people without autism, down syndrome, or other syndromes may find it easier to figure these things out about themselves. But it's not just figuring the skills we have, but figuring out how to use them and, further, figuring out how to sell our usefulness to other people. For many autistics, this does not come easily. But for those who have succeeded, that's a success despite what life has thrown at them.

It's complicated - nobody knows exactly what's going on in the guy's head that made him say what he did, though I could make some educated guesses if I wanted to.

I heard one tale that he later said he was only talking about full-blown autism, in which case I wonder why a medical leader wouldn't know better than to make that mistake. But maybe that's only to be expected from a politician with no medical qualifications.

Certainly I paid taxes, held down a job, and my parents didn't need compensation to raise me effectively, though it would have helped to give me the right support so that I could have done something more high-powered than a mediocre science job - not that I'm complaining. ASD was unknown in the medical mainstream at the time, so it would have been impossible, and hey, I survived. Anyway, my point is that he, deliberately or otherwise, spread belittling falsehoods about Aspies. Methinks an apology is due.

Of course, RFK Jr. has no clue what he's talking about and is only a "medical leader" because of politics.

I'd wager that it's not necessarily that he was just referring to only "full-blown" autism, but instead that he doesn't think anything aside from that is autism at all.

I am so enraged by the remarks of RFK Jr. "Those kids will never hold jobs ... Pay taxes ... Play baseball ... Write poems ... Go out on dates." Is this the definition of a valid human life? And who is he to decide?

Maybe he was saying how sorry he feels for us? Or maybe not.

I never met anybody yet who enjoyed paying taxes, just that some folks know it's a necessary evil, even if it could be done without the American insistence on lay individuals filling in the obscure forms accurately on pain of arrest. I see holding a job as a similar necessary evil and I have a hard time relating to the American tendency to bond with their employers.

As for baseball, that definitely sounds like a contrived appeal to the narrow mindedness of many Americans. But I won't get started on political leaders and their professed love of sport. Personally I'm not so annoyed about dates and writing poems, probably because I like those things myself, though it depends what is meant by dates. The ritual of the guy taking the girl out to dinner doesn't float my boat very well, but I always had a soft spot for romance, depending on the definition.

He could have been a lot more precise, but I suppose Trump's core supporters would have thought it was too intellectual.
