I've only heard a few Nick Cave songs, but I like what I've heard. I want to get into him.

personally, i would recommend either "let love in" or "murder ballads" if you are unfamiliar with his music. "let love in" is creepy but slightly up-beat and "murder ballads" is cave at his most depressing and morbid. don't be tricked by the "best of..." album because the tracks on that compilation were badly selected.

but my favourite cave song, of all time, is (are you) the one...? another depressing song that triggers a powerful emotional response in me.

"oh, we will know, won't we?
the stars will explode in the sky
but they don't, do they?
stars have their moment- then they die."

Yay! I've finally found another Nick Cave fan, even if I had to hijack a thread about the beloved Radiohead! I concur about Cave's sense of humour too, most people miss it because they can't see past the darkness.

I love both of those sings you've quoted, that particular bit above makes my skin tingle and my head feel light. Fantastic stuff. I think his most wonderful work is O'Malley's Bar, but only when taken as a whole, and that's just too big to quote!

Tom: if you like what you've heard so far then prepare to be dazzled by what you haven't heard.
I'd recommend buying these albums, strictly in this order:
Murder Ballads, Let Love In, Abbatoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus, The Boatman's Call, The Good Son & Henry's Dream.
The rest you'd probably only bother with if you're really dedicated, although there's some cracking songs on Nocturama, No More Shall We Part & The Firstborn Is Dead. None of the albums (and there's a few) really sucks in any case. I agree with Hecate too, don't bother with The Best Of, because it isn't!

o' malley's bar is a master piece. i particularly like the twist at the end, after the character has killed all those people, he contemplates suicide but can't go through with it because he's scared of dying!

Yep - I would struggle to think of any song by anyone who even comes close.

The story telling/traditional style of Murder Ballads is really cool and has surprised me that it doesn't wear out quickly no matter how many times you listen to it. Love it. :D
