It seems like a lot of Star Wars games have "The Battle of Hoth" stage from The Empire Strikes Back.

The tall tower makes appearances in about every other fortress in New Super Mario Brothers, and that has gotten on my nerves as annoying, deadly, and stale. Reoccurring obstacles also are a problem. "I just had to dodge a smaller version, now this? Blah!". I think Earthbound had lesser problems with having overused areas. Each area was different, and small enough that it did not get stale.

Not enough Department store levels, where you have to fight though a shopping center. I would like to see something like a Wal-Mart being a fighting ground. I point to another unique game, Revolt, a great RC racing game in my opinion.
Not enough, "Your average guy saves the world."

Wow never thought I'd be saying this, but I'm getting a bit tired of the final frontier, mostly the same staple planets that all have unique biomes that are present all throughout the planet, the same rocky environments that you clearly photoshopped from the Mars rover camera, the same aliens who only want to kill you because you're human or the kind that don't like you but won't kill you outright. The same superpower politics that you ripped straight from either Star Wars or Star Trek, the same lightspeed sequence, the same...I could go on for weeks.

Oh please....played Sins of a Solar Empire? IIRC Homeworld and Homeworld II are different. Also the lightspeed in SOASE is pretty different than other universes, and the aliens aren't attacking because they're humans; it's for other reasons.

Why can't we be the bad guy here like everywhere else where we can be total bastards. I'm not saying we should be able to play as Nazis but one where the US isn't the noble protector of the world that we thought it was. How come movies, TV, and
books can be anti-war but not games?

Command and Conquer: Generals and Zero Hour did.

I don't mind such locations being overused, but I'm not particularly fond of jungle temples. Always confusing and hard to get around. Don't like constant sandstorms or barren city streets, either.

It's the level design that matters, really. If locations were more open and lively, but not in the GTA style, that would be great. It could give games a tactical, freelance play style, and yet a linear storyline.

Now that we're done whining about various level-based video game cliche's, let's get started on coming up with some original ideas!

...anyone, anyone?

While the scorched no-man's land lit up by rivers of lava gets old after three or four appearences, the fact is, there are only so many environs that you can shoot/butt-whomp/cast your way through.

The surface of a giant walnut? Though I wouldn't be surprised if Super Mario Galaxy already used that one...

Yeah, it's surprisingly hard to think of a location that isn't at least slightly cliched by now.

Exploding barrels? You mean Donkey Kong Country? They have a lot of exploding barrels that send you off flying, right?
