Joy Division = best band ever. I won't reply to all the stuff on this thread cos I've only just found it, other than to say Joy Division speaks to me in a way no other band has.

Favourite tracks - Transmission, Autosuggestion, She's Lost Control - both versions, Day Of The Lords, Twenty-Four Hours, New Dawn Fades, Dead Souls, Atrocity Exhibition, Komakino...

Best starting point for the uninitiated - Substance. Then Unknown Pleasures, then Closer. Then get the collected works 'Heart And Soul' for all the bits you've missed. You have to hear this band. :D

Huh? Wha'? Are you saying "Don't listen to Joy Division?" Or "I don't get Joy Division?" Or "I don't know anything about Joy Division?"

As Captain Kirk would say to Mr. Spock, "Explain." :?:

I haven't heard anything by Joy Division as of yet, but I heard that New Order was basically Joy Division, and since I've heard tracks like Blue Monday and the all-conquering Confusion. In all seriousness, to this day I can't figure out how someone who made tracks like Blue Monday can make a rave track like Confusion, which was featured in the now-famous Blade rave scene and spawned a ton of sound-alikes  with Warp Brothers' Phat Bass being the most prominent one.

New Order is Joy Division minus (obviously) Ian Curtis and with Gillian Gilbert on keyboards and vocals. The key members of both groups are Peter Hook (bass) Bernard Sumner (guitar, keyboards, vocals) and Steve Morris (drums)

Part of the reason NO can range so far afield is Peter Hook's longtime interest in dance music and DJ'ing, starting with some dub mixes (which were accidentally erased from the master tapes) of Joy Division tracks. There's an interview with Hook in the latest issue of OC Weekly--www.ocweekly.com--in which he talks about his DJ exploits.

I forgot to mention Bernard Summer's side project Electronic, wherein he collaborates with Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys) and, if memory serves, Johnny Marr (The Smiths).

i too am a big JD fan. anyone ever read the numerous books namechecked by ianc? such as atrocity exhibition and dead souls? dead souls is quite humourous according to a friend of mine. also as anyone ever seen the movie stroszek by herzog? i have seen that and its most excellent.

the chicken stops here

oh and favourite song would be either dead souls or the eternal

I love Colony, Decades, and The Eternal. I also like Canidate even though there's not much substance to the song.

yes, atrocity exhibition is truly a classic book. by JG Ballard, all of his work that i've read is mind blowing. i'd strongly recommend it.
as far as joy division, i'd say probably closer is my favourite of their albums.

Anyone here read "Touching from a distance"? He (Ian) didn´t seem very nice but he was a lyrical genius!

I had thought about reading Touching from a Distance, but I'd rather not know much more about Ian Curtis and leave his personal enigma intact. :P

Listening to Closer, when I'm in the right mood, is like dropping through completely the hole I'm stuck in and looking at things from the other side; everything around me sort of becomes a pointless, outside system. That's the best way I could put it. Their other albums are great (minus the overrated pop culture niche "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "She's Lost Control") but Closer is pandimensional. Actually, Uknown Pleasures has that quality as well, but not to the same extent.

Joy Division are forever on a plane separate from other bands.

Joy Division were the best, how Ian Curtis wrote them lyrics is beyond me.

I rarely listen to Joy Division nowadays.
When i had my first bout of depression, i was constantly listening to Joy Division.
A friend of mine at university who was sectioned also constantly listened to JD.
I used to think they should come with a health warning. I don't believe this anymore; 'happy' songs don't make you happy. Sads songs don't make you sad. But they may reflect mood. JD are powerful, it's a sure sign of depression if you listen to them most of the day, everyday.

They have so many beautiful songs; the whole of 'Closer', 'New Dawn Fades', 'Novelty', 'Autosuggestion', 'Exercise One', too many to mention.
It's a shame i rarely play them; they evoke too many bad memories.

edit: Worth reading 'Touching From A Distance', but probably best not to, if you want to leave him as an enigma. You may find out he really was just a glue-sniffing mancunian.

Joy Division = Cool.

Without them, they're wouldn't be my favourite band New Order. 8)

If you like JoyDivision, you'll also like the movie 24 hour party people.
