Fascinating! It's very common in Russian to insert a 'y' sound like that, e.g. in нет/'nyet'. In fact, Russian has two letters for each vowel sound, one for the vowel with the 'y' in front, and one without, e.g. Я/'ya' and А/'a'. This is how the Russian alphabet has 10 vowels in it. Editing to add: нет in handwriting, as apparently in italics, can look like нет.
