Ahh I used to love Mudvayne - have gone off them a bit now.
I recently got listening to some Cult of Luna, which I rather liked.. and Meshuggah, Children of Bodom, Murderdolls.. and such things!
I have got some Disturbed and I don't mind it but it is rather generic I suppose - there are better things out there!
Hoping for news on The Unholy Alliance tour - as they've been talking about bringing it to Aus.. very exciting, considering Slayer are headlining.. and other bands like Mastodon, Lamb of God and Children of Bodom are in the current line up. Anyone heard anything new about it? Gosh, after missing Opeth in April and hearing how great it was, there is no way I would miss Slayer AND the other bands.. 8O

I also have a intrest in the black metal scene that occurred in the 90's thanks to my sister buying a book called Lords of Chaos.

I 1st got into metal in 94, and quickly focussed on the Norway scene. I even got a tape-trader to send me about 4 hours of norweigan TV with the Vikernes trial & all the related documentaries & interviews (none of which i could understand).

Still listening to the Running Wild discography... (albums 2-6)

A few good artists there. Have you checked out the new Slayer song yet?
No I haven't! Wasn't aware there was one.. *investigates*

Enjoy. :)
Definitely sounds better than the crap on their last few albums although there still is definitely some nu-metal/Slipknot influence (guitars still downtuned to D, simple angry lyrics etc etc.). But as I said still better than GHUA at least IMO. Might buy it but I don't know yet.

Alright, I realize I'm quoting myself here but my opinion on the lead single from the new Slayer album, "Cult" has become much lower after I have listened to it a handful of times.

"I've made my choice, six six six!!"

With pathetic lyrics like this coming from Tom Araya, now a 45 year old Catholic, I almost want to remove the woven Slayer patches from my jacket. At first I found at least some catchiness in the track but now it's just annoying as the GHUA material and seems like it's just an attempt to stay cool with the nu-"metal" kids and nothing else. I guess the inspiration to be the genuine thrash band they once were may have just disappeared like it does with many other bands...

I'll probably still give the new album a spin but if "Cult", "Eyes of the Insane" and "Jihad" (sadly Cult's probably the least bad out of these 3 songs) are any indication of the album I sure as hell won't be buying it.

Yeah, ditto about the lyrics. They could've been better then that! I've only listened to "Cult" off the new album, don't know where to listen to the other 2 songs apart from a site which I can't read anything on because it's in another language :P I don't mind "Cult" for the song, I mean it's not that bad... I've been rather addicted to "Dead Skin Mask" lately though.. awesome song.

The Black Metal scene of the early 90s was...weird 8O

I won't spam the thread with a giant list of metal bands I enjoy [nothing sadder than an online pissing contest] so I'll just list the three bands who've received the most rotation on my playlist:

Metallica
Nightwish
Sentenced

I still wonder if Nightwish can continue without Tarja. Her voice, IMO, strongly defined Nightwish's sound. She also rocked live, from the DVD I watched [the DVD has fast become my amongst my favourites].

Metallica need to write a DECENT album with songs they aren't afraid to promote when touring. The setlists on their last tour resembled a nostalgia tour; seemed like they weren't entirely sure of the St Anger songs.

If you are into metal and country, then I can bet you'd like the new Rebel Meets Rebel album. I'm not any big country fan myself, but I like the sound of southern bands that have hints at thrash, like Pantera or whatever. Rebel Meets Rebel is right up there and features a country singer to boot.

I'm very into metal. Ulver is my latest find, although I've been listening to a lot of Ensiferum lately also. What's strange is that I can't really find any metal bands who maintain the consistant quality (subjectively speaking, of course) of Pink Floyd or Radiohead. Maybe Tool, but they don't release albums all that frequently.

There's lots of bands that I like, but I won't bother listing them. Off the top of my head, though, Children of Bodom, In Flames, and Opeth seem to stand out. All of their older stuff, that is (although In Flames and Opeth both have pretty strong new albums out).

I really like NightWish, mostly for the vocals. Leaves Eyes has some songs I like a lot, too. I'm not too big on most metal though, especially if the singing style's Death Metal-esq. I like a lot of the instrumental choices found in some black metal bands (like Cradle of Filth), but the singing style just kinda ruins it for me.

Check out this metal site.

This one, too.

EDIT:

I just went back to these sites and I'm disappointed. The reason I posted those 2 links is that one of them used to be loaded with samples you could explore. Don't know what happened. :^{ Sorry.

Cradle of Filth are sort of like the mainstream/commercialized version of black metal and are more or less seen as a joke on any bm board...
I'm not saying that this automatically makes them bad or good (even though I don't like them personally) just that they are not the best of examples.

Growled vocals sometimes seem to be an acquired taste that take a while to grow on you, and if not black and death metal might not be the genres for you as it's more or less one of their defining aspects.

Yeah...well I have heard other black metal bands. I just really can't stand the singing style even though the instrumental choices are sometimes cool (the combination of metal with classical, etc.)
