Dream Theater - Solitary Shell

He seemed no different from the rest
Just a healthy normal boy
His mama always did her best
And he was daddy's pride and joy

He learned to walk and talk on time
But never cared much to be held
And steadily he would decline
Into his solitary shell

As a boy he was considered somewhat odd
Kept to himself most of the time
He would daydream in and out of his own world
But in every other way he was fine

He's a monday morning lunatic
Disturbed from time to time
Lost withing himself
In his solitary shell

A temporary catatonic
Madman on occasion
When will he break out
Of his solitary shell

He struggled to get through his day
He was helplessly behind
He poured himself onto the page
Writing for hours at a time

As a man he was a danger to himself
Fearful and sad most of the time
He was drifting in and out of sanity
But in every other way he was fine

He's a monday morning lunatic
Disturbed from time to time
Lost within himself
In his solitary shell

A temporary catatonic
Madman on occasion
When will he break out
Of his solitary shell

All day staring at the ceiling
Making friends with shadows on my wall
All night hearing voices telling me
That I should get some sleep
Because tomorrow might be good for something

Hold on
Feeling like I'm headed for a breakdown
And I don't know why

But I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell
I know right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
A different side of me
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired
I know right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be...me

I'm talking to myself in public
Dodging glances on the train
And I know, I know they've all been talking about me
I can hear them whisper
And it makes me think there must be something wrong with me
Out of all the hours thinking
Somehow I've lost my mind

But I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell
I know right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
A different side of me
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired
I know right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be

I've been talking in my sleep
Pretty soon they'll come to get me
Yeah, they're taking me away

But I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell
I know right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
A different side of me
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired
I know right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be

Yeah, how I used to be
How I used to be
Well, I'm just a little unwell
How I used to be
How I used to be
I'm just a little unwell

I agree on that one too besides Simple Plan's "Welcome to My Life" :)

I like this one. "Let Me Be", performed by the Turtles, written by P.F. Sloan

Please don't mistake me or try to make me
The shadow of anybody else
I ain't the him or her you think I am
I'm just trying hard to be myself
Though society's goal is to be part of the whole
That may sound good to you, not to me

Let me be, let me be
To think like I want to
Let me be, let me be
That's all I ask of you
I am what I am and that's all I ever can be

Don't try to plan me or understand me
I can't stand to be understood
I could never give in to or ever live up to
Being like you think I should
I've got some inner need that I'm tryin' to heed
I can't take hand-me-down destiny

Don't try to change me or rearrange me
To satisfy the selfishness in you
I'm not a piece of clay to mold to your moves each day
And I'm not a pawn to be told how to move
I'm sorry I ain't the fool you thought would play by your rules
A to-each-is-own philosophy

I like the Flying Dutchman (most of the opera, mind you)

Damned to wander the world until the judgement of christ, very appropiate for myself. Liked it even before I knew what the hell they were singing (its all in german) but it strikes a vibe in myself.

Pick up the Lost Alone CD from Mind In A Box. It will change your life.
The only track I dislike is the first one, but after that, it really is another story.

Mr. Roboto, by Styx. It could have reminded me not to give in:

I've got a secret I've been hiding under my skin
My heart is human, my blood is boiling, my brain IBM
So if you see me acting strangely, don't be surprised
I'm just a man who needed someone, and somewhere to hide
To keep me alive.
Somewhere to hide, to keep me alive.

I'm not a robot, without emotion, I'm not what you see
I've come to help you with your problems so we can be free
I'm not a hero, I'm not a savior, forget what you know
I'm just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control
...

The chorus of the beatles' Eleanor Rigby:

"All these lonely people
where do they all com from?
All these lonely people
Where do they all belong?
Aaahhh, look at all these lonely people"

I like this one. It's called Songs of Love. I have the Ben Folds version. I don't know if he wrote it though, I'm pretty sure it's a cover.

Quote:
Pale, pubescent beasts
Roam through the streets
And coffee-shops

Their prey gather in herds
Of stiff knee-length skirts
And white ankle-socks

But while they search for a mate
My type hibernate
In bedrooms above

Composing their songs of love

Young, uniform minds
In uniform lines
And uniform ties

Run round with trousers on fire
And signs of desire
They cannot disguise

While I try to find words
As light as the birds
That circle above

To put in my songs of love

Fate doesn't hang on a wrong or right choice
Fortune depends on the tone of your voice

So sing while you have time
Let the sun shine down from above

And fill you with songs of love

Fate doesn't hang on a wrong or right choice
Fortune depends on the tone of your voice

So sing while you still can
While the sun hangs high up above

Wonderful songs of love

Beautiful songs of love
Beautiful songs of love
Beautiful songs of love

I only know part of the chourus and the first verse of this song, but it is funny and relevant to aspies.

("---" denotes unknown line)

Friday night i crashed the party,
Saturday i said i'm sorry,
Sunday came, i smashed it up again,

---,
---,
---,

---,
---,
---,

---,
But i made it home alive,
And now everybody thinks that i'm insane!

You may be right,
I may be crazy,
But it just may be a lunatic you're lookin' for,
Turn out the lights,
---,
You may be wrong, for all i know, you may be right!

That's all i know. A bard's job is so hard... i prefer outright wizardry anyways...

my nomination goes to a song by Poison The Well Called Artists Rendering Of me

With all my said unsaids , never swallow the idea of a happy ending
Another days memory dies
As I'm made to smile ,these lifeless days have left me with an empty heart
another wounded memory dies.
I could never swallow your false ideals of a lifeless happy ending
how could words slit wrists and doors close?
present day heart felt moments killed by a slap to the hand
another wounded memory dries
poisonous screams with messages not thought of when released
another day here
another memory dies

This is a fairly obscure song from John Linnell, of TMBG fame, its off a side project he did called state songs. All though the songs have nothing to do with states...

Quote:
Here I sit outside the window
Longing to be asked inside
Until someone sees
Being polite
Though scared to death
They let me in

Woman wonders who's your itchy friend
Woman says, "I thought he was with you"
Woman says, "I thought he was with you"
They slowly back away from him
At best he's very interesting
His brushes with success were just an accident
No one likes New Hampshire man

Broken-hearted old man of New Hampshire
Flower-sniffing poet of New Hampshire
Charming witty drunk
Gate-crashing parasite
Self-pitying, enbittered
Morose New Hampshire man

Woman wonders who's your itchy friend
Woman says, "I thought he was with you"
Woman says, "I thought he was with you"
They slowly back away from him
At best he's very interesting
His brushes with success were just an accident
No one likes New Hampshire man
No one likes New Hampshire man

These lyrics hit on a standard theme of un-acceptance that seems to hit pretty close. The actual music of this song has this very out of place odd band organ, that isn't exactly playing sounds that sound quite right... but it plows along and with the lyrics makes something thats very poignant I think. Despite what the creator's intentions initially were.

...and the one that was my personal theme song for well over a decade, "How Soon Is Now?":

I am the son
and the heir
of a shyness that is criminally vulgar.
I am the son and heir
of nothing in particular.

You shut your mouth.
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
just like everybody else does.

There's a club if you'd like to go.
You could meet somebody who really loves you.
So you go, and you stand on your own
and you leave on your own
and you go home, and you cry
and you want to die.

When you say it's gonna happen "now"
well, when exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
and all my hope is gone.

You shut your mouth.
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
just like everybody else does.

*Sigh* :(
